Precipitation in the desert is infrequent, so when it does rain, it comes on suddenly and very heavily. Deserts don't have any type of water drainage systems, and the rains fall too fast for the soil to absorb the rainfall, water overflow becomes excessive. This results in quicksand & sandstorms, which can lead to drowning by sand. So, yes, from sand most of the time.
