Handa’s surprise is a book that I had forgotten about but remembered straight away when I saw the front cover. It is an excellent book to incorporate in the classroom as classes are more diversed it is important that children feel represented within the books they read. It is also important that others can learn, read and look at the illustrations to learn about the different cultures.
It is about a girl called Handa who has a basket of fruits she takes to her best friend however on the way various creatures steal her fruits, when she arrives at her friends Akeyos she receives a big surprise. The fruits have all been replaced with tangerines which fell into her basket on the way. Akeyo was extremely happy as tangerines were her favourite fruit.
