It spends a long time on slow scenes describing scenery or furnishings and ordinary conversation, then in one sentence we are told someone died in a freak accident. (At least 3 characters die in freaky ways.) Or someone suddenly reveals a family secret a propos of nothing. I guess Forster was already well known when this came out. His other books, such as A Room with a View, Howards End, and Maurice are quite readable but this is just weird. I read it for my classics group on GR and the best thing about it was that it was fairly short.
