Lamia has been described dozens of ways throughout the years, but throughout all the descriptions one important part stays the same: Her rage. She is still completely and utterly furious that her children were taken from her. It may have been centuries ago but being unable to get the image out of her head, for Lamia it might as well have been yesterday. She hates Hera with a buring passion for what the goddess made her do, and if the opportunity to make her pay presents itself, there's no question that Lamia would take it.

But anger isn't her only emotion. Her children were her world, and they were ripped from her. Lamia, despite constantly lashing out, is incredibly sad. It's as constant as her anger: the grief she feels over what happened to her kids. It haunts her, causing as much sorrow as it does fury. And that sorrow is what gives the other gods hope about her. As long as she feels sad her kids were gone, there's still humanity in there. She's very much a monster, but that sadness keeps her just human enough they pity rather than hate her.

None of the gods know what to do with a woman who eats children almost obsessively. But she can still carry on a normal conversation, and she was one of the rare few among Zeus's favorites, given that he visited her more than once. After all, almost no one likes Hera. Them trying to help Lamia is half for her sake, and at least partially to stick it to Hera, try and help someone she hates. Luckily, Lamia has nothing against the gods. They've only helped her. But she hates almost any and all goddesses.

Unfortunately, Lamia tries to solve her own problems. She's grown so lonely that she'll sleep with almost anyone, just wanting to have her own children once again. She knows logically that she's physically unable to have kids anymore, but she has to try. Perhaps unsurprisingly her rage carries over onto her partners, and she typically ends up eating them. Despite her reptilian appearance, Lamia actually hates snakes. People associate her with them all the time, and that pisses her off more than almost anything.

When she gets focussed on something, it can be almost impossible to shake that concentration. She's actually incredibly clever, which is rarely seen. The easiest way to break her focus is with bright, flashing lights, since she can't blink they irritate her eyes. She has unexplained gaps of sanity, from moments to years of seeming normalcy no one can explain, No one, even her, knows why they occur, or what triggers her back to her normal state. However, they know that pain or intense anger triggers her more feral side and try and avoid that.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Lamia is completely insane. That much is obvious. She's so overcome by her grief and rage, she can focus on nothing but that. At this point she's obsessed with getting her vengeance on anyone and everyone she feels the need to. But she can get intensely focussed on just one thing, and it can be easy to capture or injure her when she's so focussed.

The gods are known for their affairs with mortals, and even though Zeus is the main one Poseidon has been involved with mortals before as well. He saw a woman named Libye on the beach and of course Poseidon quickly became infatuated with the princess. They ended up sleeping together, and she gave birth to two children, twin boys Belus and Agenor. But Libye was no human. She was a daughter of Hecate, and now that she knew of the gods she was able to tap into that. She used her magic to claw her way to the top of a kingdom, becoming a queen of a whole nation she named after herself, Libya. Poseidon visited her again, and once again she gave birth to twins: Lelex and a girl, Lamia.

The kids may have grown up without a present father, but they still grew up well. None of the children were stupid and all were considered worthy to lead as they got old enough, but Lamia was the most clever of the group. She may not have been able to beat her brothers in wrestling, but she could beat them in chess or any strategy game any day of the week. She was fortunate enough to have family that cared about their family more than power, and her brothers were simply proud of their sister. When Libye died, Belus became king, as he was the eldest. But Libya was in a strategic position, and one by one the boys who became king were killed.

But Lamia was finally queen, and she was no fool. She knew that if she played this right she could remain alive and queen, and the first thing she did was pray. She made offerings to her father Poseidon as well as her grandmother Hecate. Both of them answered the prayers of a queen, and in no time Lamia was powerful enough that she could singlehandedly take down any attacks from other countries. Luckily for her people Lamia had no desire to be a tyrant, and she simply kept them safe.

But Zeus grew curious about this mortal woman that his brother had blessed and visited her. In a completely unsurprising turn of events he ended up sleeping with her, and she gave birth to a child. But in a new thing, Zeus visited her again. They had a total of three flings and three children, as he found he actually liked the fierce queen. But of course, all good things must come to an end. Hera discovered where her husband had been going which wasn't a surprise, but she was furious that he had dared to go back to someone more than once.

As expected, Hera went after Lamia and her children. But this was a queen blessed by two or three gods, and she was determined to not let herself get pushed around. She did her best to defend herself and her children, but of course she stood no chance against the queen of the gods. Now Hera was furious that Lamia had not only slept with Zeus but had dared to challenge her, Hera decided just a death or a curse was too good for the queen.

Lamia was forced to eat her own children, to the horror of even the other gods. Still, not even they were going to challenge Hera. When she was satisfied that Lamia was sufficiently punished Hera just left Lamia, completely ignoring her. She was completely destroyed. Her children were entire world, and now they were dead. Because of her. And she had eaten them. What she had done completely drove her over the edge into her grief and rage.

She knew she could never actually get to Hera herself, so Lamia started hunting down any children the goddess showed favor to, eating them to complete the poetic justice. Hera was furious and once again lashed out at Lamia, this time cursing her physically. The the once proud queen of a nation was reduced to a mad snake woman, never able to close her eyes so she would always seen her dead children.

Lamia started going a step farther, eating children of anyone she could, whether they were mortal, demigod, it didn't matter. Zeus couldn't directly counter Hera's curse but he could offer her some solace, giving Lamia the ability to remove her eyes so she would at least have some respite from the images that tortured her constantly as well as the ability to return to her original form if she wanted to. He also gave her the gift of prophecy, with the hope that maybe a new focus would help distract her from the fate of her children. It didn't work. She just kept on with her viciousness, devouring children whenever and wherever she could.

She raged and rampaged for a few hundred years, but humanity was getting more and more civilized. The other monsters didn't have her cleverness or her viciousness, so it was decided that she was too dangerous to let her continue to kill and eat them. The gods ended up capturing Lamia, but they didn't have the heart to destroy her like that had Kronus. After all, she wasn't actively trying to destroy any of the gods, except maybe Hera. She was just another victim of the queen of the gods gone mad.

Gods like Dionysus and Apollo visited her frequently, trying to help cure the madness. But neither of them could counter a curse from Hera. She was clever, however, and escaped frequently. Every single time she just wreaked more havoc until they captured her again, just proving that there was no way that she could be allowed around mortals.

Lamia had nothing against the gods, just Hera, but she grew more and more irate at them for keeping her locked up. They started having to keep it more quiet so Hera wouldn't find out they were actually trying to help someone she cursed, but Lamia was having none of that. They had to keep her in worse and worse cages, and she ended up imprisoned with Titans and other creatures frequently. But Lamia had no issues with eating other species's children and of course she was hated by all of them, having eaten titan children as well.

She angered enough people that they literally had to put her in solitary confinement in Tartarus, but with her cleverness at escaping and the titan's viciousness, she was quickly removed from that as well. Currently her prison is a single solitary cell tucked in an unknown corner of the Underworld. Not many gods know where she is at the moment. Hades does, as it is his realm, Poseidon knows the location of his daughter, Zeus knows where his former love was, and Dionysus and Apollo both know due to their visits to try and cure her of her madness. It's suspected that Ker, Phonus, and Thanatos know her location as well given their close ties to death and the amount of it she's caused, but there's no confirmation.
