Rachel | 3524 comments Please post any questions/comments/updates regarding the summer 2021 reading challenge in this thread.

The Summer 2021 Reading Challenge will begin June 1st and end August 31st.

Rules of the challenge:

Read 3 books (or more)
Complete 3 tasks (or more)
Any genre okay
Rereads okay

This summer, complete 3 (or more) of the following:

1. Many talented authors celebrate birthdays in the summer.

So this summer,

READ A BOOK BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

Megan Abbott
Fredrik Backman
Dorothy Koomson
Jhumpa Lahiri
Carmen Maria Machado

2. Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid will be published June 1st.

So this summer,

READ MALIBU RISING WITH THE GROUP

MOTHER MAY I BY JOSHILYN JACKSON IS THE BONUS GROUP READ

3. Luca is an animated film about 2 young sea monsters curious about the world above. So they disguise themselves as human beings and go on an adventure. It’s set in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera. It’s set to stream on Disney Plus on June 18th.

So this summer,

READ A BOOK SET (AT LEAST IN PART) IN A SEASIDE/COASTAL TOWN/CITY

4. International Day of Friendship is on July 30th.

So this summer,

READ A BOOK WITH THE LETTERS F-R-I-E-N-D IN THE TITLE/SUBTITLE

5. Free Comic Book Day is on August 14th. It’s usually in May but it’s been moved this year due to the pandemic.

So this summer,

READ A COMIC BOOK/GRAPHIC NOVEL

6. The movie Candyman is set to be released in theaters on August 27th. It’s been described as a “spiritual sequel” to the original movie from the 90’s.
The original film was loosely based on a short story by Clive Barker. It centered on an urban legend -the candyman. If you say his name 5 times in a mirror, he comes for you. He haunts the Cabrini Green Housing Project which is where he was murdered many years earlier because of his relationship with a white woman.

The sequel takes place in modern day. It’s been years since the last of the Cabrini towers have been torn down with expensive homes taking their place. An artist struggling to find inspiration moves into the now gentrified Cabrini. He hears the story of Candyman and becomes obsessed -incorporating it into his work. Things go bad after that.

So this summer,

READ A SEQUEL
OR
READ ANYTHING BY CLIVE BARKER
OR
READ A FICTIONAL PAGE TURNER (ANY GENRE) THAT HAS SOCIAL COMMENTARY

7. Random task. This counts towards the challenge but is not inspired by the season.

So this summer,

READ A DIVERSE SCIENCE FICTION OR FANTASY NOVEL

HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE SUMMER, EVERYONE! :D

Franzi | 74 comments Ohhhhhh Rachel I have been so excited about you releasing the summer prompts and I am sooooo chuffed! I LOVE the prompts you chose. Malibu Rising is high up on my list and I can’t wait to read it! I have also never read a graphic novel and looked into them last week and have decided to ask for „Maus“ for my bday this summer and can’t wait to get it.

As soon as my little one is off my tummy from her nap I will start adding the prompts to my journal ... I created a page ready for them a couple of weeks ago 🤩
Thank you and happy summer reading ☀️☺️❤️

message 3: by Franzi (new)

Franzi | 74 comments Right, shelf created. 🥳 I’m just struggling with the last prompt. What’s diverse science fiction? I googled it and found some lists. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir being on my to be read list and on one of the diverse lists... but I couldn’t really find a definition? 🤔

You’re welcome, Franzi! Glad you like it. :D

I’m also looking forward to Malibu Rising Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid It’s been getting some good buzz and seems like a good choice for summer. I’ve read her once before and enjoyed it. Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Maus graphic novels-look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Happy Reading ! :D

I’m sure Project Hail Mary is going to be really good but don’t see it working for the challenge -not sure why it was on a list of diverse books.

Diverse meaning -including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.

I just wanted a prompt for science fiction and fantasy books with diverse characters preferably written by BIPOC and/ or LGBTQ+ authors.

Just a few suggestions

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler
The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, #1) by N.K. Jemisin
Jade City (The Green Bone Saga, #1) by Fonda Lee
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1) by Becky Chambers
Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse

There are many more titles to choose from but just wanted to give you some suggestions.

message 6: by Franzi (new)

Franzi | 74 comments Oh thanks... I thought that first but then got confused. I will probably go for Kindred, I’ve been meaning to read that for ages .

message 7: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments Another great challenge! I'm so excited. I think I've told you before that I am only choosing books that I already have on my shelf for these challenges. The only exception is Malibu Rising and that I will get from my Audible account. I loved Daisy Jones and the Six on Audible. Thanks for including sci-fi and fantasy. I read The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, #1) by N.K. Jemisin for another book club and I think NK Jemison is an excellent writer. Like most good science fiction and fantasy, not easy to get into as the author is world building, but so worth the effort. I also have Kindred by Octavia E. Butler as a graphic novel so I am going to do that one.

Thanks Rachel for making reading fun!

Thank you for suggesting science fiction and fantasy- I was having a hard time coming up with a fun idea for #7 so appreciate it. :D

I found I have several FRIEND titles on my shelve...will start with The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie and then figure out the rest.

I've started reading another book which works best with Task #6 (sequel + fictional page turner of social commentary). The book could also work as diverse science fiction.

Spin by Patricia Cornwell
Spin (Captain Chase #2) by Patricia Cornwell

I'm about half way through Mother May I.
I've only read one other book by Joshilyn Jackson and that was The Girl Who Stopped Swimming. I finally read that book last year after purchasing it about a decade previous. Enjoying Mother May I much better than The Girl Who Stopped Swimming.

Glad to hear it starts strong-I’ve never had patience for the slow burn mystery/thriller. I want to be pulled into the story from the opening chapter.

Mother May I certainly starts strong :-)
There is a revenge story here along the lines of a recent film, Promising Young Woman. The book would be an interesting Mother's Day choice.
I'll finish Mother May I this weekend.
Now I'm curious about Jackson's other book with a game in the title, Never Have I Ever.

Movie Recommendation : THE SPARKS BROTHERS
An impressive documentary spanning 50 years of SPARKS (music group). A quirky duo, very entertaining. I'm going to buy me some SPARKS music and I hope the documentary will be released on DVD.

A Favorite Twisted Passage from Jane, Unlimited:

Christopher Robin is screaming. How strange, Jane thinks, watching him as he screams. He's skinless. The cherry-blossom snow has eaten the skin of his face and arms and of the legs above his expedition boots. He's red and oozing, his outside is visceral, he is the scene in the movie we turn away from because it's horrible. But it's how our bodies look, under our skin. Pooh is screaming. Piglet is screaming. Rabbit is screaming.

Christine | 798 comments I just finished Madam by Phoebe Wynne

It counts as book set in a seaside town. Very Handmaid's Tale, very gothic, very creepy.

I've started listening to Malibu Rising. Good so far!

That happens to me sometimes too- sometimes I read along with the audiobook to help me focus on the story or I just switch to reading it partway through if the audio isn’t working for me.

Hope your next book is more enjoyable. :)

Rachel | 3524 comments Finished Mother May I by Joshilyn Jackson and Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid .

These were both 3 star reads for me. Hope everyone currently reading or planning to read these titles enjoys them. Either way look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts. They both have very good ratings -just fell a bit short for me.

Rachel | 3524 comments It’s been a little quiet in this thread-check in if you can. Hope all is well. :)

message 47: by Franzi (new)

Franzi | 74 comments Hello,
Sorry I’ve been quiet. We had someone close to our heart being ripped away from us sudden and unexpected and way to soon and it took me a bit to find focus again. I’ve been reading but not had my heart in it much.

So far I’ve read One August Night by Victoria Hislop, sequel to The Island. The Island was brilliant but the sequel seemed rushed and I didn’t like it much.

I’ve also read Fly Away, sequel to Firefly Lane , by Kristin Hannah. It was nice but again can’t compete with book 1 I think.

Im listening to Malibu Rising at the moment and like it a lot. I cannot edit to see what happens … 50 min to go .

I will listen to The Four Winds next and planning to read Anxious People by Fredrick Backman. He’s one of my favourite authors. I loved Ove, then read the Grandma one which featured Britt Marie and then read Britt Marie. I liked them both. I wasn’t a big fan of Beartown but the short letter to his son was lovely again. So yes, excited about the weeks ahead and my summer reading :)

Still waiting for Malibu Rising to become available at the library. There were 100+ holds on the book when I requested it (when the challenge was posted). I think I'm in the lower 50 now.

I am doing well, been working a bit at the movie theater. Black Widow is doing great for opening weekend. My MP3 Player I've been using for audiobooks broke this week and stalled my reading progress. Got me a replacement yesterday, so I'll be back in business soon. Happy Summer Reading! :-)
