Eragon (The Inheritance Cycle #1) Eragon question

Has anyone else ever been told that a book is good, then you read it yourself and it wasn't?

Opinions. Everybody's got 'em.

There are not objective criteria for what makes a book "good," and even if there were, not everyone would agree that a particular book met that criteria and to what degree.

Still, there have been cases when a friend whose opinion I unusually agree with talks up a book that I can't see any redeeming value in. Not so bad to break a friendship (why argue about trivialities?), but enough to make me perplexedly shake my head.

Those who praise Hunger Games or Twilight come to mind ...

Happens every now and then with friends of mine. They will read something and just go on and on about it and I will find the book slow, boring or just too "Meh" to even get through it. I think it just depends on tastes and moods. My sister in law LOVES Jane Austin. Can't get enough. I am a weird soul that finds her books annoying and the characters make me want to scream and slap them....lol. I don't think either of us are right or wrong because we are different people.

Yes. Sadly it has led to disappointment. I am more careful now on picking books.

It depends on what each person likes to read and how that person feels at the moment. Sometimes you start reading a book and its like "I don't like this book", but sometime later you try again and you like it or love it.

Yeah, it's called personal preference.

I usually pick my reading material for myself, but usually when I get recommendations from friends the books is what it's cracked up to be. However, (this may seem a little weird) one book I've read that came across as a bit less than it was advertised as was The Fellowship of the Ring. For some reason, although it was a perfectly good book, it didn't strike me as genius.
