Kristin is much beloved by her parents as the sole surviving child for a number of years until her younger sisters come along though her mother especially is subdued by the loss of the earlier children. Kristin lives a fairly sheltered life. Her parents and family are strongly devout in Christianity visiting and supporting the local churches and priests. While not as strong in lineage, her father is well respected as a fair and moral land owner and does well. While still young and newly betrothed, Kristen is accidentally embroiled in a small scandal as one young man assaults her as she leaves another in a secret good bye (though innocent) meeting, neither her betrothed. She decides to do a year in a convent to escape the talk in the community only to meet Erlend, also not her betrothed.

The writing is really well done and shows such a history of the early traditions in Norway with land, family and religion. It is a fascinating history and I enjoy the writing and the complexities of life at that time. The writing and character development is strong enough that I was yelling at Kristin and Erlend. They are so real. Kristen is so young and they are so foolish. Their bad choices and Kristin's taking on of Erlend continued reckless behavior is so frustrating. I'm only hoping that this is intentional as the young maiden part of the trilogy and perhaps she will grow and mature in the next books.
