Agreed on that. It depends on a specific asian country, but mostly it's a taboo indeed, especially amongst elderly generation.

There should be cameras in some areas, but more private areas don't usually have them. I also think that they were clever enough to hide jewelries in another bag. I mean, who's going to store them in the same bag they were when you stole them?
As for Nathan part, he might clearly see that it was a man, not a woman. Or the context that Meddy knew that the body was male made her assume that he also guessed that it's male. And in a situation like that, it's very hard to think clearly and come up with a better answer, usually people do really silly things when they are startled/panicking/hiding or afraid of something. They do and think after ;)
