Was the MC raised on the commune with their mother? What happened to the MC's father?

Was the whole book about the visit to the commune?

Boonville and Shampoo Planet have people raised on communes, but I don't know if they go back to visit during the story.

Good questions - these are the reasons why I am trying to find this book! :)
But I have to say Rainbowheart, well done for suggesting Boonville based on my particularly vague description! You are spot on with that suggestion - that is the book, thank you!
It is the character/story of Sarah that has stuck with me in my vague recollections. Now I just need to track down a copy!
