Theresa | 15655 comments Greetings from a warm and sunny NYC! We are having a lovely spring, with evenings still cooling off.

How great is it that we are all becoming less about shelter in place and more about doing more eating out, seeing family and friends, going into places.

I have even spotted tourists in midtown Manhattan. Still a long way to go. Lots of olaces still closed. But slowly...

Anyone spotted something new opening or re-opening after a long year? For me it was my favorite nail salon. It closed permanently last year. But, new owners took it over and they are excellent. Still not very busy there ... local hotels catering to international crowd and conferences are still mostly closed, and businesses in area not yet back in offices. I hope they survive.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8441 comments Well, my family and I went to a restaurant where our parents frequently asked the mariachis to play favorite songs. And it was the same group of mariachis and we had them play a dozen or more of our parents' favorite songs. We were all singing along, clapping, yelling out gritos, etc. The band members all kept their masks on, but since we were eating dinner we were maskless (and ALL fully vaccinated). Felt "normal" for the first time in over a year.

Also ... have shared hugs with friends ... including Robin P when we met a couple of weeks ago.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11108 comments It's a beautiful day upstate too. I rode my bike for 25 minutes and sat outside reading. I feel like my brain fog is starting to lift. It was a glorious day.

My brain hasn't caught up with the news that things are really reopening. It's been two weeks since my second shot, but I'm still a little nervous about going out in the world again. We were invited to go sailing this week, but I told my husband to go without me. I've been in my own head for so long, the idea of socializing again is nice but scary. I feel like I've forgotten how to talk to people.

There are many things that used to be habits, but it's going to be an adjustment to do them again. Things like doing my hair every day, using moisturizer, teeth whitening, hair color, makeup, and an occasional mani-pedi. Not to mention wearing a bra all day, and pants with zippers.

I wonder if any of my makeup is even safe to use now.

I could really use a pedicure now that it's summer(y). I hope my place is still open.

Yes, it was so great of BC to fit it in before her long trip. We found we had even more things in common than we thought. Hope to do it again some time. We will also be meeting up with Doughgirl in June at a spot more central to all 3 of us.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments It has been gorgeous here in Michigan, expecting rain today (or so my back tells me). I have been out playing in the dirt and so anxious to get the plants I started in January into the ground. But, Michigan is a fickle gal-there has been snow in May in the past. I doubt that will happen this year, but one more week before anything goes outside.

Looking forward to our annual first trip of the summer Memorial week-end. Going to our favorite Park, only 2 1/2 hours away on Lake Huron. So looking forward to it. I need the serenity and peace right now.

@Nancy, I am also hesitant with the new guidelines. There was an episode on 1A (it is a radio/podcast on NPR if you want to check it out) about this issue. Trust me, we are not alone. My library, where I volunteer, is still requiring masks, so it is still the only place I go on a regular time table. Before pandemic, I would never go there without make-up, LoL that has changed.

message 7: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments We did our puppy pick up trip and have been home for almost two weeks!

The trip was interesting. Some places enforced the mask and some did not. There were some states we went through that we were the only ones wearing a mask.

I've gotten my 2nd shot and didn't have a single symptom. My husband on the other hand got his 2nd and thought he was dying.

The puppy is a handful! I'm constantly running after her and pulling things from her mouth. I've had absolutely no problem getting steps in. Working has been challenging. We are still slowly opening up here in WA. We did have our first potluck with neighbors and friends... 12 people!! It was outside, but hugs were given and it was so good to see everyone. It's a normal Fri thing we do all summer long at our neighbors house and we are excited we get to do it again this year.

I have decided to throw all my make-up away (I never had much to begin with) and start fresh.

I some point I should probably switch back to real bras instead of sports bras. I hate all my jeans and need to get new ones now. I love that baggy is in style :)

message 8: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9248 comments Wow, throwing away makeup, who knew? I didn't and I am someone who has always been golden about hygiene in other areas.

I've never had any eye infections or anything from it.

Now that I really should wear it every day, I am just not in the habit. So, should I be tossing my mascara and buying new?

I keep meaning to start wearing it again now that I really need it. When I was young I stopped because I had vowed to never be like my mother (a teen thing, no doubt) and to feel I had to put it on in order to leave the house. It helped that I was a teen during a natural look era.

message 9: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments I think mascara is about every 6m? Not sure. For me I don't like the idea of it just sitting around for a year and not even opened. And I don't wear or have much so throwing the lot of it away isn't a big deal.

message 10: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Well, my mascara had dried out, so the decision was made for me :)

message 11: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11722 comments I wear makeup maybe once or twice per year - if that. I am not going to go by a schedule on throwing it out! LOL! It feels like a huge waste to me. :-(

message 12: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15655 comments I am probably tossing all my make up and starting over. Why not? I never wore much and what I have has been sitting for over a year. Mascara is bound to be dried out.

I see it as a sign of returning to a more 'open' and social life that I treat myself to new makeup. Even if it is just eye makeup and lipstick.

message 13: by Joanne (last edited May 19, 2021 03:21PM) (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments Lipstick! OMG we can wear lipstick again! How many times I put it on in the beginning, then felt so stupid when it hit me, no one was going to see it AND it was smearing up all over the inside of my mask💄

Absolutely! Great way to put it.

In fact, I think it will help ease me back into the whole concept of being out and about, help counter the uneasiness. Even though I don't need them, given my work clothes still fit fine and have been unworn for over a year, I may order a couple more items. Maybe also new earrings from a favorite artisan. It will boost confidence. Get excited about being out.

Same here! I only use makeup for special occasions, and now that I'm over 50 I don't really care all that much anymore. Even when I was younger I never bothered to use it regularly, but then again I was never a social being. Most of my social life was spent at the beach in the Philippines LOL.

message 18: by NancyJ (last edited May 19, 2021 07:16PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11108 comments I love the idea of back to school shopping. September always felt like a new year to me - more than January. I bought some new summer clothes in 2019, some of which still have the tags on them. But come fall, I'm going to need to spruce things up.

I tried to put earrings on one day for a zoom meeting, and I couldn't even get them in. It's been about 4 years since I stopped wearing them every day. It was around the same time that eye makeup started to irritate my eyes.

message 19: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments I got a few new statement necklaces and converse shoes over the last year (that I haven't worn) but need to get pants/jeans. I'm so used to wearing sweatpants, PJs, and soft leggings that nothing feels comfortable anymore. I've decided that if it's not comfortable then I'm just not going to wear it.

Karin | 9248 comments LibraryCin wrote: "I wear makeup maybe once or twice per year - if that. I am not going to go by a schedule on throwing it out! LOL! It feels like a huge waste to me. :-("

I only toss it if it's dry, but not always then. If it's water based I might add a bit of distilled water (as in a drop). I don't buy cheap make up (even some hypoallergenic stuff is no good) and no one ever told me about tossing it every six months when I bought my first tube.

That said if I were to be using it regularly and came out with conjunctivitis or something (it's been so many years I can't remember the last time I had that) I would toss it.

What I do if I haven't worn earrings for a long time is to put H2O2 on them so they slide through. (hydrogen peroxide). I just put in a third earring, and I have no idea the last time I did that. One of my three ear holes gets a bend in it if I go too long without them, so I have to put the earring in from the back first, get it through, take it out and put it in the right way. This is why I know try to keep earrings in the two main places all of the time, since it's one of those and not the extra.

Amy | 12953 comments None of you have known me in person yet, maybe you’ve got this from the occasional zoom, but I am the Queen of Bling. I just love cheap jewelry!

message 23: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5798 comments I like colorful things so I always preferred costume jewelry to actual stones. But once I started working in an office, I felt necklaces and bracelets were in the way of typing, phoning, etc. Years ago my finger got too big for my wedding ring and I put it away somewhere but have forgotten where. My husband lost his playing sports many years ago. Luckily they were both cheap because we had no money 47 years ago!

Yeah, I only heard of that some time "recently" (in the past few years). I won't though... unless, of course, it's dry, but not on a time-schedule.

I doubt my parents had much money to spend on their rings, either. I've never known either of them to wear theirs. I have no idea what their wedding rings look like!

I think Mom said she gained weight and it didn't fit, anymore. I don't know if she knows where it is or not! I'm now wondering if Dad even had one...?

Before earbuds and speakerphone, I had to make sure my earrings were comfortable to be on phone all day! Bracelets bothered with keyboard, although a watch is a necessity as I bill my time in increments. I don't like necklaces or anything hanging from my neck. I also have short stubby fat fingers so have just one ring. But do I ever have a collection of brooches....dressed up a suit just right. I wear them less since I wear fewer suits and the fabrics tend to be knits or jerseys...bad for pinning.

My mother's pierced ears would literally close up the earring holes overnight so she just wore simple studs. Mine aren't that bad but I make sure to wear earrings every few days...often just during business zoom meetings. I have friends who did not wear earrings for a while and they had to have their ears repierced. Others have the holes forever, even if they go years without wearing earrings.

message 29: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8441 comments My ears were pierced when I was a child (common in Mexican American families to pierce the girl babies' ears). I've always worn wires rather than studs and much prefer them. I used to wear them 24/7 until I "dropped" a gold hoop while showering and it went down the drain. The plumber was able to retrieve it, but it was an expensive lesson. Now I take them out at night and put them back after my morning shower.

I have all my mother's jewelry and she loved bracelets and rings. I wear one of her rings at Christmas time because it's a square-cut ruby, surrounded by small diamonds and reminds me of Santa's belt buckle! LOL I wear one of her gold bracelets and another given to me by my husband most every day. If I decide to switch to silver jewelry I wear my mother's earring hoops and her two silver bangles.

As for clothing ... I've been retired for 4 years now, but I still dress like I did for casual Fridays ... so slacks and a nicer top. (Although I do wear jeans on some days, which I never did at work.) As summer weather comes I'll wear dresses more often, I feel cooler in a dress/skirt than in pants. I don't own sweatpants or pajamas, but there are days when I stay in my robe until mid-morning before getting dressed.

As for makeup ... I gave up wearing it about 20 years ago. I never wore foundation, just blush, lipstick and eye makeup. I LOVED wearing eye makeup, but I developed an allergic reaction to it. (Yes, doctor and I both thought it was an infection, but when it came back even after I bought all new makeup and new brushes, we knew it was an allergic reaction.) For quite a while I still wore eye makeup for special occasions, maybe once or twice a year. But last fall when I tried to do so, my eyes were so irritated within a few moments that I washed it off and I think I'll just go bare faced from now on.

message 30: by Holly R W (new)

Holly R W | 3141 comments I've been enjoying all of the conversation about clothes, make-up and jewelry. Also, all of the thoughts now about re-entering the world with our vaccines.

Yesterday it was 88 degrees here and I was still wearing the sweat pants that have become so comfortable to wear during the pandemic and my retirement. I decided that I'll need to "clean-up my act" and go shopping for some more appropriate clothes - STAT.

Never being one to wear much make-up, I do wear a little. I like your ideas to buy some fresh make-up. Any thoughts on how safe it might be to get a facial?

I let the dye grow out from my hair during the past months. I get a small shock every time I look in the mirror, but do like my mixture of grays and whites. I've been going to the same woman who styles my hair for 25 years, but hadn't seen her during the pandemic. She's given me a stylish haircut - It was so nice to see her and catch up!

BC, are you back from your Texas trip? How did the big event go?

message 32: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15655 comments I too have been considering a facial. I think it is a personal decision as to comfort level, partly hinging on where you go and how careful you think they are being, how assiduously following CDC guidelines. Now that I'm vaccinated, I'm probably going to get one sooner than later. I've had friends go for them, others still not quite comfortable.

Instead of new jewelry, because I own a LOT of jewelry that has been ignored for more than a year, I've decided to buy a new watch. I own a lot of inexpensive watches -- only one or two are not some theme (Swatch) or else something else unusual. All the batteries are dead, most of the Swatches need to be pitched because the bands are in bad shape and not replaceable as they are one with the design on the watch face. I think a new watch is just the Back to Work shopping treat I need, in addition to some new makeup.

Thank you, Charlotte, for the concept of Back to School type shopping!

annapi | 5505 comments Re earrings, my ears were pierced as a baby too, and I did the same for my daughter at 2 months old - common with Filipinos as well. I kept gold studs on her ears as long as I could - she lost the earrings 3 times, I miraculously found them twice, but the third time they were lost for good when she was around 3 or 4 years old. I don't wear earrings regularly anymore, but I have no problem with the holes closing up.

Karin | 9248 comments Speaking of jewellery, one of my kids will be working for a jewellery company :)

My middle child, who will be graduating from university in June (ceremony is then) starts working for Tiffany & Co next week on Wed. She will start at the bottom making moulds (she was recruited via a staffing agency based on her resumé since sculptors make moulds if they study in college or do that kind of work), but can work her way up. In addition, they have jewellery making classes. So this could lead to creative work, which is up her alley.

The irony of this is that she wears pants and combat boots and isn't into jewellery. She will wear a dress but less than once a year and only in extenuating circumstances. She has pierced ears, but nothing fancy ever goes in them.

For those overseas who may not have heard of this company, they are quite famous over here.

This is not in New York, either, but in the state right next door (and an easy commute if you remove rush hour traffic) in this building:

Yes ... got back Wednesday afternoon. Finally finished unpacking and doing laundry this morning.

The commissioning ceremony was wonderful. And he surprised us by designating us as the people who would pin his bars on his shoulders. We managed to give a short (4-sentences) speech while doing so. Later, he told me "Tia, you almost made me cry." My sis-in-law posted to facebook. Of course, there are no photos on MY phone because I was involved in the ceremony.

Theresa | 15655 comments Oh lordy, what an end of day this has been!

First was hbe invite to repeat a workshop I gave this week. Great networking.

Next was finding out my coop client won a suit for access to perform an necessary repair in an apartment of a recalcitrant owner.

I then got outside for a late day walk and some reading time in Central Park. It was perfect weather!

Got back and saw a Facebook post by a stitching friend in our private stitching group about a Hallmark movie where she is a background extra - she mentioned manning a craft table. I posted a congratulatory message that FB pulled as violating their Community Standards and threatening to shut down the group. I appealed, extremely puzzled, and they denied it. The other admins to group also have appealed it. Only thing we can figure out is that they saw my use of the expression ' you sly d-o-g' with 'congrats' as bullying. BTW in Urban Dictionary and similar references, it is a term of admiration.

It has led to quite a lot of hilarity and derogatory comments on FB algorithms. And scotch was poured over some rocks. 🍸

Leave it to a lawyer to bring wrath of FB doen on her head.

If I'm remembering correctly, that did happen to me as a kid! I believe I did have to have the re-pierced. I don't remember how old I was, but I didn't even get them pierced the first time until I was 12 (or 10?).

Not sure yet when Dad will get his 2nd shot, but hopefully soon. I expect it will be a while yet before my 2nd, but if they want to, I will be ok if they come visit (after Dad's 2nd).
