It's time for our next Read-a-Thon of 2021! The group has been quiet the last couple of months as we have been working our way through the 2021 Reading Challenge, but as we head into summer with a new Summer Reading Challenge and the beginnings of the 2022 list-making process, let's get back into the swing of things with a Read-a-Thon!

How does this work?
If you’re new to read-a-thons, don't worry! They're very simple. You make a commitment to read as much as you can for a set period of time and then you do it. There will be games, challenges, and discussion associated with the event but, for the most part, it's about reading and camaraderie. This read-a-thon there will be both an individual and team challenge so get ready!

How much do I have to read?
There isn’t a set amount you are required to read to participate. Many people choose to set personal goals for themselves but the idea is just to read as much as you can for the week and see what you end up with at the end. It’s all in good fun!

When is this happening?
For our read-a-thon, we'll be committing to read as much as we can from Saturday, May 22 to Sunday, May 30.

As we have members in lots of different time zones, starting at the same time is a bit confusing, so for the read-a-thon you can read all day (in your own time zone) on the first and last days.

START:
Saturday, May 22. Starting whenever you get up.

END:
Sunday, May 30. Finishing whenever you go to bed.

How do I participate?
All you have to do to join up is to read! But read-a-thons are always much more fun if you participate in the games, join the discussion, and track your progress so we strongly encourage everyone to take part in that.

Where do I participate?
Keep an eye on this folder during the read-a-thon for updates, progress reports, and more! They'll start being posted closer to (and after) the event starts.

You can sign up now to join the team challenge.

As usual, we'll be posting new games every 24 hours throughout the event in this folder but you'll have the entire read-a-thon to join in if you missed anything. The discussions and games keep the event active and lively so, again, we strongly encourage participation. Come play along and have some fun!

Emma | 101 comments Hi! This is my first ever read a thon and I have a question. Is the team task in addition to the individual ones? So if I set an individual challenge of 5 books, do I then have to read team books on top of that? Or is it those 5 that are added to the team score?

Hi Emma! Your book can count for both the team challenge and the individual challenge. Think of them as two separate challenges that can overlap if you'd like them to.

I'll be posting them soon!

Alyana I just saw the team list and I am the captain for the Madagascar Pirates. This is my first ever readathon for this group and I'm not sure if I can be the team leader that is needed for the team. But I will try my best to perform the tasks needed.

Emily is a great help, so feel free to contact her if you have any questions. Usually all the members of the team can do their own posting and you are mainly there to encourage them. I jumped in as a captain fairly early even though I am terrible with spreadsheets and it worked out fine.

Thanks for the tip Robin! Really appreciate it! :)

I’m on your team, you’ll do fine. I think, everyone on the team has done read-a-thons before and the other captain is good with spreadsheets.

Hi Jillian, I'm comfortable with spreadsheets, my hesitation is I'm not so sure if I can be a good team leader. Let's all work together! :D

You're going to be fine! Being a good team leader is 80% showing up and 20% cheering on your team. That's it. That's the requirements. If the ship goes down burning, well you're a pirate, that happens sometimes.

Thank you Jackie! Are the team threads and tasks will be posted later?

I'm working on it now, Alyana! My morning got away from me but the threads (with spreadsheets) should all be posted in the next couple of hours.

Thank you for accepting my very late sign-up, Emily! Readathons are a lot of work! I'm sure everyone will do great! :)

Hi, Alyana! I was just added to the Madagascar Pirates! YAY!

I have never participated in a Readathon for this group before, but did complete a team readathon in April. Hopefully all team members will participate and complete reading the books they pledge to read. I have begun a listing of titles for each prompt. :)

Hi Lynn! Welcome! This is my first time for this group too and I was part of the April Readathon as well from the other group. Let's talk more on our team thread! :)

Just a reminder that team challenge FAQs should be posted on the Intro and FAQs thread. I'll post answers to questions there in case other teams are having the same questions.
