Booknblues | 12150 comments The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett is certainly a compelling, thought provoking novel demonstrating Bennett's ability as a sophomore author. The reader has much to think about after finishing this book, prejudice of all kinds, secrets, generational issues.

I loved reading The Vanishing Half and found that I couldn't put it down. I had to know what happened to Desiree and Stella, the twins who ran away from small town Louisiana and then separated, when before that part they were halves to the same coin.

I was struck early on how this novel almost seemed like a romantic suspense and while it soon drifted from that tone, I found I was hooked by it none the less.

There were for me a few major issues that were brought to the fore and never resolved. They did provide food for thought, but I think I would have liked them attended to.

I think that Brit Bennett is a force to be reckoned with and I look forward to more books by her.

Holly R W | 3141 comments Having read both of the author's books, I find her to be extremely talented. Like you, when I read The Vanishing Half, I found it hard to put down. My only criticism was that I wished that the author did not visit so much trauma upon every character. It felt a bit heavy handed.

I'm looking forward to Ms. Bennett's next book.
