ABANDONED. Fiction from 1970s - father uses constellations to connect with estranged son

I read this book back in the late 1970s, but can't recall either its name or the name of its author. I think it was relatively new at the time I read it.
In it the father, trying to have meaningful communication with his emotionally distant young son, uses the constellations as the basis of their dialogue. Instead of the constellations as we traditionally know them, however, he reframes them in his own creative way that he hopes will have more significance for his son. An example I recall: Orion the Hunter becomes, the Great Tennis Ball Server. Please help me reconnect with this lost work.
