SOLVED. A person walking around a dying or empty city writing home to someone because they are looking for a family member [s]

This is arriving me mad I remember the book..I loved the book...I lost the book. All I can remember is that it had a sci fi feel about it the city was empty and dying and I think that the narrator was simply looking for someone and it was all written as letters home....any help would be appreciated
