There was a "scene" where a man stays barricaded behind protection to keep shooting at small alien devices that regularly came through a portal. The aliens had telepathic abilities. I was younger hen I read it and the bond between the man and the cheetah stuck with me as did the happy "resurrection" of the cheetah at the end.

Yes that's it!! Thank you so much!!! It was a leopard, Crazy Cat. I looked the author up and saw that I had also read and enjoyed The Childe Cycle books about the Dorsai. Thanks so much for bringing forgotten books and a forgotten author back for me to enjoy again. I was an avid sci fi reader when I was much younger. I lost many books that I once had and I appreciate being able to revisist them now. Thanks so much!!!!!
