It’s too bad the task couldn’t have been in the Spring! I lived there and actually went to nursing school there but we’d all joke that island might sink because of all the festivals that happened that doubled the population. Spring Break, Mardi Gras and the Blessing of the Shrimp Fleet. I usually would try to plan to be off the island during Spring Break though!

It sounds like an exciting place to be. That title would have been great for Pub Trivia!

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Could I get Educating Rita approved?...... the hardback at 123p has the exact same number of ratings (3484) as the paperback at 96 pages. But right now, the paperback is the first book that comes up.

This is going to be a disappointment. The paperback has 2,786 ratings when the hardcover has just 204 ratings. See the other editions page:

hmmmm...that's what I did...and sorted by # of ratings and the two editions you show come in that order...but both show 3484 ratings on my computer....and I'm sure when I added this in my plan I had the hard back version come up first.

I guess it's back to the drawing board.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments What shows at the top of the book page for ratings is the total number of ratings for all editions.

message 57: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments oh......and where do I find the # of rating s for the individual edition?

message 58: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments ahhh...never mind...I found it...under the rating details for the individual edition.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments No trouble. And maybe you work that into page count 10.1?

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "No trouble. And maybe you work that into page count 10.1?"

That's what I'll probably do.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Ed wrote: "oh......and where do I find the # of rating s for the individual edition?"

I think it's easiest to use the Other Editions page. Do you have "All Details" opened up?

Yes

Rebekah (bekalynn) Has anyone read The Glass Hotel The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel ? The book’s page says setting in Canada and the description says the hotel is on the northern tip of Vancouver Island but in describing plot mentions Manhattan and also a ship.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments As the description includes the below, I wouldn't plan on 75% being in a city large enough to qualify.

In this captivating story of crisis and survival, Emily St. John Mandel takes readers through often hidden landscapes: campgrounds for the near-homeless, underground electronica clubs, the business of international shipping, service in luxury hotels, and life in a federal prison.

Marie (mariealex) | 1096 comments I am reading Marie Antoinette: The Last Queen of France, and i was wondering whether it could fit here: it is mostly set in Versailles, which is "too small" as it only has 84k inhabitants, but it is part of the greater Paris area: what do you think ?

You're more familiar than I! But the rules state that with very large cities you can include the greater metropolitan area. It seems Versailles would comply with this part of the "how to play".

Ann (lit_chick_77) | 551 comments Q about the bonuses. If you read 5 continents, do you get 100 or do you get 150 (for meeting the 3/4 bonus as well)?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2595 comments We can only read for once each city, right?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Ann wrote: "Q about the bonuses. If you read 5 continents, do you get 100 or do you get 150 (for meeting the 3/4 bonus as well)?"

Just the 100 for the continents. There is a possible 250 points for finishing, though, with the 100-point regular finisher and the 50- pointer for 10 different countries.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "We can only read for once each city, right?"

Yes, 10 different cities per round. If you were to do a 2nd round, you could use the same cities as the first round.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2595 comments If I read a book that takes place in Main Town USA, can a read a book that takes place in Podunk, USA?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "If I read a book that takes place in Main Town USA, can a read a book that takes place in Podunk, USA?"

I don't think either of those are real places, Jayme. But if you can provide a link that shows they are real places and each with over 100,000 population, then yes.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2595 comments They aren't, I was just using them as an example.

Ah, sorry I misunderstood. Yes, as long as you are reading different cities, they can all be in the same country. There is a bonus for 10 different countries if you want to try for that, but it isn't necessary.

Mary | 1398 comments I would like to read Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha by Roddy Doyle.

The Goodreads setting is listed as Barrytown Ireland which seems like it is a fictional neighborhood of Dublin.

Can this count as being set in Dublin?

Although Barrytown is a fictional neighborhood, it is set in a real city. This is somewhat of a stretch, but we'll allow it as Dublin.

Anika | 2793 comments I am having a struggle and need some insight, Elizabeth…
I finished a lovely book which is set in a hospital in Glasgow. They never leave the hospital for the duration of the book, but one patient tells the other stories of her life which occur outside of Glasgow and those stories account for more than 25% of the book…
so will it fit (since she’s sitting in a hospital in Glasgow while relating her stories) or not (since many of her stories—and therefore many pages—happen outside Glasgow)?

It's Glasgow through and through. It's like those books that take place in one day though the characters tell stories that take place over the years.

Interesting. Several reviews say it takes place in an unnamed country, others that it switches between several locations.

Can you use it for page count? (304 pages)

message 90: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) I don’t know of unnamed country. Since it spefically names Istanbul, Prague and the Soviet Union.
In fact it starts with an agent being on a plane flying to Istanbul that crashes and the airport at Istanbul where the people awaiting the arrival having different conversations. It has names several Soviet cities that characters visit or call or where they lived formerly.
I’ve completed the first round of page count and now trying to finish the second round of RtM. I guess I can start another page count but I won’t get much further

Rebekah (bekalynn) Is the 100 pt completion bonus only for the first time completed or do every time completed? Just completed second round
