i haven't read TMI i just started with TDI and i loved it. there wasn't much confusion bcz the author kinda explains everything

honestly, i would recommend it because there are a lot of parallels drawn especially with city of heavenly fire and theres a lot of world building at a more basic level in the mortal instruments

and the best part of TDA, for me was to see how much the characters have grown bc most of the characters in TMI were not very appealing bc they were still teenagers and making irrational decisions but in TDA they are SO SO different. if you dont read TMI, thats something you wouldnt be able to pick up either. i just finished TDA yesterday night and yeah i rlly rlly recommend u to read TMI AND the infernal devices before picking up TDA bc TDA consists of all the characters and if you dont know them before, it will be kinda overwhelming bc TDA has A TON of subplots with characters that we've been introduced to before

like you want to reap the full benefit and enjoyment from tda, i strongly recommend you reading TMI AND especially tales from shadowhunter academy there is a LOAD of VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION in tales from shadowhunter academy that comes into play in lady midnight and the books after, but especially in lady midnight.

if u truly truly dont want to read TMI (although i know the first 3 books are kinda mediocre/annoying, its worth it and u can think abt it as stepping stone to reading TDA), you have to at least read the last 3 books of TMI, TID and tales from shadowhunter academy
