“Damn it!” Jia Xuan let out a growl of frustration and threw her pen across her wooden study table. The table was covered in folders of mock exam papers and open legal books with foreboding titles like The Rule of Law or Is Eating People Wrong? stacked sloppily against each other. The occasional highlighter and neon note pads provided pops of colour against the stark array of white pages filled to the edges with small font, strewn about the table.
Jia’s brain felt like a puddle of mush and when she closed her eyes, it was like her mind created her own kaleidoscope but instead of pretty flowery patterns, lines upon lines of cases and acts reeled in her mind, remnant of her intense studying for the past two hours. She knew her concentration would only pull her through one hour maximum, but she had a test in two days and she still hadn’t gotten the last section down to a T. Law school was tough but her parents were breaking their backs at home, 2000 miles away, to afford her tuition. She was a first-generation college student and her sister was so proud of her for getting into law school and was always on the phone, expecting another report of her fantabulous results. Safe to say, there was a lot at stake.
She was grateful for it all. To be here in a rich foreign country, studying under the guidance of the best professors, having two loving and supportive sisters, experiencing the life her siblings never got to. But now, all Jia wanted was a cup of her mother’s signature siang cha, an aromatic concoction of herbs and flowers that brewed into the most complex flavour profile in a tea Jia had ever tasted. She just wanted to be able to close her eyes and not unconsciously start rehashing the dates of this act and the people who oversaw that case.
She sucked in a deep breath and felt her chest puff up, and let it all out in a whoosh. She might or might not have also let loose a high-pitched trill to wake herself up. With everything a little clearer than before, she reached for her pen again.
-----------
She had lost track of time and was immersed in a whirlpool of law cases and ethical dilemmas that she didn’t even notice the door had opened silently.
A large shadow first loomed over from behind and Jia felt a pair of warm arms come around her. She jumped, her whole body tensing as she jerked back into her chair away from the pair of arms, lean and lined with visible tendrils of muscle shifting underneath smooth pale skin. Definitely masculine arms. She recognised the familiar pattern of fine black hair that thinly dusted those arms and the letter tattoos stark against his pale knuckles were as familiar to her as her own reflection in the mirror.
She relaxed and her hand flew up from the table, landing squarely on those arms. A yelp came from behind her.
“What was that for?!” Jules smooth voice filled the room. Jia hadn’t realised how quiet it was before.
“For scaring me! You should’ve knocked!” Jia exclaimed, her voice grating with dehydration. She cleared her throat and reached for her cup of green tea on her study table, placed precariously on the edge. The tea had gone cold but the chill was surprisingly welcome.
A soft laugh came from behind Jia. “Sorry?” Jules teased, not even trying to sound sincere.
Jia detached the pair of arms that were still around her and stood up. A few shuffles away from the table and she stretched, pleasure shooting through her entire body. While her hands were still sticking straight up into the air, Jules bent down and encircled her middle, enveloping her in his warmth. Jia smiled contentedly as she relaxed her arms around his neck in a firm embrace, his dark messy hair tickling her cheek and nostrils. Without warning, Jules picked up her up and instinctively, she hooked her legs around his waist just like she’d done a thousand times. Jules was tall enough and Jia petite enough that he easily picked her up like he picked up his favourite bolster.
She pressed her lips against his, light as a feather. She revelled in the softness of his lips and the way her heart started to speed up like an engine gearing up. They broke apart, both smiling as they peered into each other's faces.
Jules hugged her tighter and nuzzled her neck. “Stop studying already, Jia. You’re already a genius. Go for a brownie with me.” The rumble of his voice tickled her neck and Jia giggled. She unhooked her legs and detached herself from the well-needed embrace.

“You never fail. That’s my job.” Jules wrapped his huge hands around hers, his thumb affectionately caressing the top of her hands as he sat down on her bed and pulled her to stand in between his knees. He looked up at her through his lashes, his dark eyes were genuine but he was sporting his signature lopsided smile. Jia poked at his dimples absentmindedly, a habit she was so used to that she wasn’t even aware of it anymore.
“Don’t look so proud of yourself. You don’t fail,” Jia said, but a small frown grew on her face. “But, yes, you could do so much better. You just don’t put in effort.” Jia shoved him playfully. Of course, he was immovable. A strict workout regime did that to people. Not that Jia was complaining.
Jules feigned an expression of hurt and put his arms on his heart.
“Your heart is on the left side.” Jia pointed out, a smile playing on her lips despite herself.
Jules shifted his hands to the left side, amusement making his eyes sparkle. “Yes, ma’am. Only you would know where exactly my heart is.” His mouth parted mid-smile in expectation.
Jia would’ve secretly swooned on the inside but rolled her eyes at him like she always did when he made his corny comments, had she not spotted the time on Jules’ watch.
10:13pm.
Her smile contracted immediately. “It’s 10:13pm.”
“Revolutionary as always, ma’am.” Jules grinned wider.
“10:13pm already. I only have 3 hours left to study if I want to go to bed by 1 AM.” She scrambled to her study table and called out to Jules. “Sorry, I don’t think I can go, Jules.” She let out an ugly sound of discontent. “I have to study.” She sighed and turned her attention to the mock paper she was about to finish, hurriedly tucking her jet black hair behind her ears. It was almost physically painful to refuse a brownie escape with Jules but she had no choice. She needed to do well.
“I can’t believe you can’t count.” Jules called from her bed, voice still playful and full of tease. He didn’t really think she’d refuse a brownie outing.
“What?” Jia asked, confused. “Count what?”
“It’s 1:13am. 3 hours left if you want to go to bed by 1:13am.” Jules voice got louder as he approached her.
Jia rolled her eyes and let out a huff of laughter in response.
“Jia, come on. You can say no to me, but can you say no to the Bing! Brownies?” Jules uttered in a horrible TV announcer voice. Jia could almost see him wiggling his eyebrows as he talked, despite having her back to him.
“I can’t, Jules! Stop tempting me.” Her frustration was only doubled by not being able to go. She really wanted to and she had been working hard for the past week. Didn’t she deserve a break? It’s just 45 minutes. She closed her eyes, images of her favourite brownie and an F on her exam paper flashing alternately in her head. She swallowed, perhaps in hunger.
“AHHHHH! Whatever. Okay. Jules, let’s go. After I finish this paper. Give me 20 minutes.” Jia turned her chair around and glared at him, murderous that he convinced her to neglect studying. Well, not much convincing was needed, but it was still his fault that her brain was now filled with the decadence of hot brownies instead of which year the Magna Carta was issued in.
He had stretched his long legs on Jia’s pale pink sheets, his phone in his hand. He turned to look at Jia and brought his shoulders up in an exaggerated shrug upon seeing her glare. She huffed again and turned her attention back to her paper.
_________________________
God knows once Jia got started with her work, 20 minutes was not enough.
“Jia, It’s been half an hour. Bing! closes at eleven o’clock.” Jules reminded her as his dexterous fingers worked at her shoulders, massaging the tension out of her shoulders. Had Jia not been so absorbed in her work, she would’ve noted the slight curtness in his voice.
Jia mumbled incoherently, unclear whether she was reciting something school-related or responding to him.
Sighing, Jules took his hands off her shoulders and went back to scrolling his phone on her bed.
Ding!
The notification alert startled her and she reached for her phone. Message from Jules. Photo attached. Jia grunted, “Jules, what the heck?”
She opened the chat box and a high-quality picture of a brownie Jules sent popped up on her screen. Another message from him popped up, this time the salivating emoji.
Annoyance bubbled up in Jia. This was the third time Jules had interrupted her concentration. Coming from a household with two nieces and a nephew, she had had enough of interruptions to last her a lifetime. It was the number one reason she wanted to study away from home, to be able to study uninterrupted. She turned to him, lips pursed.
“Sorry Jules. I can’t. I’ve got to get back to work.” She tried to look apologetic, but she knew better than to be sorry about prioritizing her studies over a boy.
He walked over to her, a small frown forming on his forehead, expression unusually serious. “Jia, you have to take a break. You’ve been studying all week and we haven’t spent any time together.” For the past two months. She heard the unspoken words, hung in the air.
“Well, you should’ve come over earlier and not two days before the test.” Jia muttered. The conversation was starting to become incredulous. Why should she have to justify her schedule to him?
“I deliberately came over closer to the test to force you to take a break. I know how stressed you get right before, and I'm right. Look at you already being so irritable.” He threw his hands out in front of him gesturing at me, exasperation lacing his words.
The exasperation fuelled her annoyance. “Because you’re so irritating!” Jia snapped, voice a notch louder than it had been before. She saw him flinch, but stress was an unleashed beast that she had no control over. “You should be studying with me, motivating me, making my study sessions a little more bearable. Instead, you just interrupt me and distract me. You’re not helping, you’re making it worse!” Regret lanced through her heart the moment she heard the words ring through the room. The pain she felt was reflected in Jules’ eyes as they widened in disbelief. He opened his mouth as if to say something but closed it again, shaking his head.
Jia hated people who lashed out at others for things unrelated to them, and right now, that included herself. Despite the anger that prompted her to say those words not being caused by him, she knew, deep down, she meant it, as much as she hated to admit it. She knew Jules sensed it too. He knew her too well.
He jerkily reached for his coat hanging over the board at the foot of the bed and said softly, “I’m sorry.” Without another word, he opened the door and left.
“Where are you going?” Jia heard the wobble in her voice. Jules had never walked out on a fight before. The sound of the door clicking shut was the only reply.
