30.5 - Dlmrose's Task: Ready to Plan

Are you feeling lucky? Try your hand at Earth Roulette and start planning travel again!

Read two books

Book 1: Go to Earth Roulette Click "generate my destination". At the top left under "Filters" select a continent other than your home continent. You may apply any other filters of interest.
Click "Apply and spin"
Record your result. You may spin up to 3 TIMES by returning to Filters and clicking "Apply and spin", recording the result each time. If the generator results in a duplicate country or US state you MAY spin again until you get 3 unique countries/states (state that when you post)
Read a book set at least 50% in the country of one of the resulting destinations. If your selected continent is North America and the destination results in a US city, read a book set at least 50% in that state.
ex. Europe
results = Calvià, Spain; Cassis, France; Bradford, England, United Kingdom
North America
results = Lowell, Massachusetts; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada

Book 2 : Select a continent other than the continent used for book 1 or your home continent and repeat the process. Read a book set at least 50% in the country of one of the resulting destinations. If your selected continent is North America and the destination results in a US city, read a book set at least 50% in that state.

If you cannot access the website, ask in the help thread and your destinations will be generated for you.
Required: State your home continent and the 3(+) results: continent and the countries/states for each book.

TraceyL | 1069 comments I just wanted to say that this task is really fun! You get a little bit of control in narrowing down what area of the world you would prefer to read from, but the element of chance makes it more interesting and pushes your boundaries a little bit.

I've done my spins and got some countries that I haven't read from before, but I'm excited for! I love it!

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3946 comments greece and australia are my spins

message 6: by Julia (new)

Julia (julia103) | 2874 comments For Europe one of my spins was "Carrickfergus, UK". Since it says UK, does that mean I can use a book set in England?

(Carrickfergus is in Northern Ireland. Both England and Northern Ireland are in the UK, but I tend to think of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as separate countries.)

message 7: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 1716 comments I got Kinsale, Republic of Ireland. I'm assuming a setting of Ireland works, correct?

message 8: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 13 comments I got Kalamazoo, US for one of my spins. Does this mean I read a book set in Michigan? I doubt I could find one set in Kalamazoo 😀

Like in the example, Bradford, England, United Kingdom. Use Northern Ireland.

From the task and the examples if "the destination results in a US city, read a book set at least 50% in that state."

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3946 comments Edited to give three spins for each continent
Oceania
1. Dubbo Australia - can I use australia or do I have to use the part of Australia that Dubbo is in i.e. New South Wales?
2. New plymouth - New Zealand (north Island) again does it need to be that specific?
3. Wanaka New Zealand as this is same country as number 2
4. Bora Bora French Polynesia

and North America
1.Brantford Canada
2. Kirkland USA (washington)
3. Danburry USA (Connecticut)

Marie, following the instructions:
book 1- not Europe - pick a continent then 3 spins.
ex.Oceania
Read a book set at least 50% in the country...
Dubbo Australia = Australia
New Plymouth, New Zealand = New Zealand

book 2 - not Oceania, not Europe then 3 spins
ex. North America
Brantford, Canada = Canada
If your selected continent is North America and the destination results in a US city, read a book set at least 50% in that state.

I am quite happy with less than 3 spins for each continent but if I have to have 3 I have spun again for both continents and edited my post above

Robin P | 1873 comments There are some odd categorizations. Not only do China and Japan come up as Oceania, which might makes sense, but also United Arab Emirates.

Dee (austhokie) | 9191 comments DLMRose - I got Hong Kong for one of mine - but its technically a chinese protectorate - so can i go with China or should I look go for HK? (I have a lead on a couple HK books but wanted to check)

message 20: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 1716 comments So I am really looking for a verification of my query, which I think got missed (post # 7). If I just missed the response, I'm sorry in advance.

Kinsale, Republic of Ireland (I believe it is Southern Ireland)

As Julia in post 6 pointed out, part of Ireland is in the UK, Northern.

Does the setting need to state "Republic of Ireland," or does "Ireland" work as a setting?
The Glorious Heresies

Sorry for the delay, you would need to use Republic of Ireland. Many settings tagged Ireland would work, but you need to avoid Northern Ireland- Armagh, Belfast, Derry, etc.
The Glorious Heresies looks to be set in Cork, so that would work.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3879 comments So, one of my "North America" places has come up as Temecula, Southern California, US

Would I have to read a book set in Southern California (LA and south), or is California as a whole okay?
