Has a rival called iris, blonde and beautiful, opposite of our main character who is skinny and dark haired. I recall iris sleeping with an incredibly old man, the world they are set in is at war with lizard people and Tian sets out on a mission to find a prince who is communicating to her from a different world or something... It's a terribly depressing set of books, the characters never get a break. The cover was black with different colored gems on each book. I remember airships, a girl who felt pain whenever her skin was touched (yuli?), she becomes pregnant and ends up losing the baby due to someone convincing her to eat raw meat to survive. She has a twin who dies? I have so many details in my mind but google just won't help me! I read these books pre-2014 I would say.

Did the book use the term "artificer"?
This fantasy series is for adults?
I can't recall for sure if they actually called artificers, but they worked in a workshop creating magical /mechanical objects for use in the war. There was also a thing about needing to repopulate to replace people dying in the war. And was illegal to take anything that would prevent pregnancy.
I just posted on Facebook to a fantasy group and they got it straight away! It's a series called Well of Echoes by Ian Irvine. The first book is called Geomancer and apparently they are artisans rather than articifers. Thank you!
