Looking for a book I read about 25-30 years ago and which I was probably way too young for. Pretty sure it was written by a female author. Grim book about a group of people traveling through a machine ruled galaxy and find out the machines use humans for partz in their factories.

This makes me think of a book by Greg Benford - one of his Galactic Center books, Great Sky River, or Tides of Light. The people find that some of the mechs use human body parts in weird art works, and other purposes that are hard to understand
