"Crushing gravity, thin air, freezing winter, searing summer under two suns. A deadly wasteland teems with monsters and fatal fever. A thousand untrained Earth men, women and children are brutally marooned on the planet Ragnarok by a sadistic enemy. That night, 200 die. In the morning, survivors decide what they will live for - revenge. The Survivors aka Space Prison. Included in Cold Equations"
This is the first of two stories in the series Ragnarok. The second is the novel The Space Barbarians

Humanity expands into space. Can't communicate with aliens and time after time we fight different aliens. After much bloody and difficult expansion into the stars, a crew crash lands on a planet and have to survive on a very hostile planet.
Several generations of adapting to the new environment such as high gravity and dangerous landscape/animals/plants etc.
Humanity stumbles across them a few hundred years later and the protagonist is a highly evolved human and subdues the earth visitors. He trains a dog like animal which can communicate telepathically which solves humanities expansion/communication problems. They take the new ship and head out into the stars.
Please, somebody has had to have read this book and I would love the opportunity to get into its pages again.
