Book is about the founding of a colony on a new planet that is based off of pre-Soviet Union Russia and surrounding states. The colonization is aided by nanotechnology. The colony is founded by a man whose wife is Russian Orthodox. There is an huge dark forest on the planet which has aliens in it. The aliens enjoy torture/causing pain to others. The colony founders wife gets captured/gives her self to them to try and stop them from stealing colonists. One character is a woman with snake like data cables coming from her scalp that can connect to various ports. They're referenced as being medusa like. Another character is a man whose eyes were replaced by rubies/jewels and used nanotechnology interfacing through these rather than sight. Baba yaga shows up a couple of times as well but is not a main character. There is a serial killer who terrorizes the colony which muddles them figuring out who has been killed by the serial killer and who has been killed by the aliens. There were multiple books in this series and I think parts of the plots might have run together in my head.

A, around what year did you read this book?
