I reread this book recently, rebering the countless times I read the series back in the day. Diary of A Wimpy Kid centers around Greg Heffley, a middle schooler who just wants to be cool. His best friend, a good and kind hearted person but immature, is by his side. Grey has to deal with his rebel older brother Rodrick, his well inteninoing Mother, susan and his dad, Frank, who wants him to be more athletic. Greg’s year is filled with roller coasters of highs and lows before ultimately realizing who his true friends are in the end.

Honestly, the part that surprised me was just how little dialogue and how much drawings/sketches are in the book. Another part that struck me was how narcissistic Greg was. He always only was concerned with himself, and thought himself above others. Greg went from likable to unlikable in my eyes, and I find myself resonating with Rowley, who I previously found uncool and immature. His parents, who I thought of as annoying, were now seen as well mannered but just could not cope with Greg and Rodrick unwillingness to adapt to anything. Some of the jokes are really senile and I would, like to think people are way better in middle school. It kind of disillusioned me for the series but It makes sense. The simple fact is I am not 12 or 13 anymore. It’s not the book’s fault. It is mine.
