i have the book with me right now and while it has the funniest moments (when starr's mom interuppted prayer to say that she wants to turn the basement into a guest suite for her mom and starr's dad went "no, lord" made me laugh until i cried kjghdfkjh) it made me cry like a newborn baby. and i legitimately don't understand what people have against this book. like????? what are you drinking babe this book is a ✨masterpiece✨
This is one of my all time favorites!! It's such an important book, and really well written. It makes you feel all kinds of emotions- you laugh, you cry, you get angry. Starr's voice is so powerful and she is the icon of black girlhood. You can feel everything that Starr feels, it's written in such a way. It's heartbreaking because it shows the harsh reality of racism and the justice system. This is just a masterpiece, as abby said. Definitely recommended to everybody!
