I was really hoping this was going to be about Haymitch, but I will still read Snow's story. Maybe next time??
Just go in with low expectation (I think you are), and you'll probably enjoy it. It has some fairly big problems, but I still enjoyed being back in the Hunger Games world.
Yeah... the reviews haven't exactly been glowing, but I am hoping it will at least be fun to be back in their world.
I really enjoyed The Hunger Games books, but decided to skip this one. I will follow this discussion, maybe you'll convince me to change my mind?
I enjoyed the read but it didn’t meet my expectation to understand how Snow got to the top. Maybe there will be more books in this series to fill the gaps.
It was just OK for me and I loved the series. 2 stars and this review " Lucy Gray Baird was a wonderful character and one to care about. If she had been the focus of the book it could have been a great addition to the series. Snow was a bad choice IMO for a main POV character. He was unlikable then as he was later. And more boring as a youth. All the things that made Hunger Games series inspiring and emotional were missing for me because of the Snow focus.
My advice is to avoid the audio version of this book. I have been unable to separate my dislike of the narrator from the story itself. It was fun to be back in Panem, and I appreciate learning where Snow came from. If you like Hunger Games and want back story, go for it; it's not a long or arduous read.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games #0) by Suzanne Collins
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capital, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to outcharm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.
The odds are against him. He's been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined -- every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute... and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.
