This is the first in the DCI Will Blake series. It is set on the Wirral and, especially for those who are familiar with the area, makes great use of the landmarks and place names to really set the scene and enhance the story.
It is quite a complicated plot with a lot of characters, but expertly handled. The reemergence of an old case, interwoven with modern day murders, has an interesting layering effect on the storyline that works well. There is plenty of action and some lovely description, giving, in some parts, a moodiness to the writing, reflecting not only the evil being done but also the greyness of the Mersey shoreline.
William Blake is still an enigma at the end of the book but promises to be a well rounded enjoyable character. Our introduction to him is lightly sketched, but we see insights into his past that are starting to build quite a complex back story. He carries his own mystery with the disappearance of his mother. The prequel novella, Tyger,Tyger explores her disappearance and is just as well written. His relationship with his mother's cat, Seraphina, and the animal behaviorist, Laura Vexley, and her quirky personality, adds humour and a softness to his seemingly tough exterior.
The plot keeps you guessing, but gives so many clues along the way that you are kept hooked throughout. A thoroughy enjoyable read, especially for those who know the geography of the peninsula.
