Suzann | 384 comments Seems like if we use extrinsic aids we should at least credit them. The disparagement of aids might lead to their use without acknowledgment. My experience is that participants in this group are very well read and sound academic, if they are not technically academics. For me, the extrinsics raise issues that have been under discussion for ages and might be worthy of consideration by the group. There is rarely consensus among critics and the reflections of this group of readers merit consideration.

Aiden Hunt (paidenhunt) | 352 comments I may not contribute as much because of a few writing projects fighting for my attention, but I'm in for Beowulf. I've never seriously studied it and Heaney's translation has been on my list for a while.

I developed a fondness for epic poetry studying Homer, Apollonius' Argonautica and Virgil's Aeneid. Looking forward to seeing how Old English compares.

If you have access to the illustrated edition of Heaney, I hope you enjoy the visual art as well as the poetry. (I do.)
