How in the world did Tobias escape? Turns out he was just a figurehead and Nicole and Joseph were the leaders of the crime enterprise. Did that come as a surprise?

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments I was surprised that Nicole and Joseph were running the whole syndicate. And, I thought they would kill Tobias before the end of the book.

I'm not sure how he escaped. Maybe the house had some hidden tunnels in it.

It was a big shock to learn Tobias was just a figurehead. And, it still perplexes me how Joseph turned out to be such a major figure. I wish we’d learned more about his background.

With so much law enforcement around, I at first found it implausible that Tobias got away. But then I remembered they had so little time to assemble a team and no time to recon the property. Then it made sense.

Melissa (melissasd) | 676 comments I was also surprised to find out about Tobias. There were so many people afraid of him that it was a shock. Joseph had mentioned to Nicole to use the exit to the ravine if anything happened, so I wasn't surprised that Tobias was able to escape.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments Melissa, I missed the mention about the exit to the ravine. Good catch.

Great catch!

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments After the last book and how Tobias was portrayed as the master criminal, I was surprised to find out he wasn't. He was a crafty one, but no criminal genius. I was surprised that he was dumb enough to show up at the hospital and try to kill Kane.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments I was surprised by that too, Anita. It was such a dumb move to go to the hospital. At the time he was probably the nation's number 1 fugitive. I know he was a bit obsessed with Kane, but did he really think he could walk into the hospital and blow him away with no repercussions?

Melissa (melissasd) | 676 comments I totally agree with Robin and Anita. That was a stupid move by Tobias, but one that Kane knew was going to happen.

He lived up to how Nicole and Joseph characterized him...completely crazy and making stupid, rash decisions. She’d spent her entire adult life cleaning up after him. Well, he got them all killed, including himself.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments He escaped the raid and everyone except Elise died. It was so stupid to go to the hospital and try to kill Kane. He could have gotten away free and clear. He was smart enough to make everyone believe he was the mastermind. He surely had resources to escape clean.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I agree with you. I thought that Joseph said Tobias didn't know about that escape route. That was his backup plan for Nicole. I might be wrong though. There are a couple places that I need to re-read.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments Sharon, you are not wrong. Joseph thought he and Nichole were the only ones who knew about the secret escape route. Tobias was a lot crafter than anyone gave him credit for.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments Tobias surprised me in the end. He did turn out craftier than his family led us to believe
