I can't even fathom these sort of people. I guess their lives have been so wretched from the start and they seem to have lost their humanity. Although it doesn't happen to all, fortunately there are examples of people with tough circumstances such as Kim herself, Sal and Ken throughout the book who don't succumb to the darkness. I thinks it's mentioned that Kai Lord himself didn't come from impoverished circumstances... unfortunately there are people who will exploit other people for power and money. It's part of the human condition. Just awful.
I’ll never understand how women can do this to other women. Roxanne reminded me of Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein’s groomer. I have had it left mostly to my imagination as to how she lured these girls into his orbit but this gave me a lot of insight as to how those poor girls were misled.
Oh my goodness Jonetta. We were watching a documentary yesterday about Epstein. I said to my son that Ghislaine reminds me of a character in a book I just finished. There is something wrong with a woman who can help men abuse young girls. I believe It is their way to ensure that are a part of the man's life. The acknowledgement from the man, that they are finding the right girls translate as feeling "loved."
I got the impression that Roxanne felt these girls were a gift she gave to Kai for his love and protection even though bring in a girl doesn't always save her from a beating. Also, the fact that the neighbors thought she was helping the teens, enhanced her feelings of feelings of self worth.
Wow, I was wrong about Sal! I answered this question before I had finished the book. That was a great twist. I thought Sal was an example of someone who still had a good heart despite her circumstances. Boy, got that wrong. Nice on Angela Marsons.
It sounds like Ghislaine Maxwell popped into everyone's minds when we read about Roxanne. I don't know what anyone's motivation would be to do what Roxanne did. Sharon, your explanation makes sense to me.

I just saw emptiness in Roxanne and don’t think she has the capacity to feel love for anyone. It’s all about elevating her own circumstances. Even though Kai tested her, I think she was smart enough to see them for what they were. If Kim hadn’t taken him down, Kai was going to be in trouble at some point.
