I understand that her dad can't take seeing her get hurt and almost dying but he goes about things the wrong way. He chose her for the bad guys to go after in the last book and in this one he gets her arrested. Plus he looks the other way when he stepmother mistreats her. He's really not a great dad (hide spoiler)]
