WHAT
you take geometry as an 8th grader?? i took it in tenth

this is how my school does it
advanced:
7th - pre algebra
8th - algebra 1
9th - geometry
10th - alg 2
11th - pre calc
12th - calc

not advanced aka what i do bc i'm dumb:
7th - j 7th grade math
8th - pre alg
9th - alg 1
10th - geometry
11th - alg 2 (this is what i'm taking and the grade i'm in)
12th - pre calc or stats (you can choose)

basically you need 4 credits for each of your core classes in hs
essentially you get one for each year since there's 4 yrs in hs

As Mary said, you normally need 4 credits for each of your core classes if you want to graduate with an advanced diploma. I think you may only need 3 for a regular one, but I'm not sure about that.

In most states, Algebra I is considered a high-school credit class so if you're taking (and pass) algebra this year then you'll have 1/4 of your credits.

I can't say I'm familiar with numerical grading so I don't know what a 3 translates to in letter grades. I would say not to worry about your algebra grades just yet because colleges can't see your quarterly grades, only your final yearly ones and they don't even see the exact percent from what I've been told

message 3934: by Lorelei (new)

Lorelei (literarylitanies) | 373 comments Also, they most likely won't be looking at middle school grades. Once you get to high school you start having to worry a little more about grade upkeep

I don't know how all states or high schools do this in the US but for mine in Virginia, to graduate you have to have the following number of credits (earned for passing the class):
English - 4
Math - 3
Science - 3
History - 3
PE - 2
Foreign Language - 2
ECON - 1
Electives - 4
Total - 22

5 of these credits have to be verified, meaning you passed the final exam for that class. Those five are:
English - 2
Math - 1
Science - 1
History - 1

So that just means you have to pass 2/4 of your finals for English and 1/3 of you Math, Science, and History ones

message 3942: by Lorelei (new)

Lorelei (literarylitanies) | 373 comments So that's for a standard diploma. Some schools/programs (like the one I'm in) require you to have the credits for an advanced diploma to graduate from high school and go to college/higher education. The number of verified credits required remains at 5, so you just have to pass more classes but not necessarily the extra exams.

Those credits are:
English - 4
Math - 4
Science - 4
History - 4
Foreign Language - 3
PE - 2
ECON - 1
Fine Arts - 1
Electives - 3
Total - 26

You don't get more high school credits than usual, but if you pass your AP Exam at the end of the year then it can qualify you for college credits in that course depending on the college. Some colleges accept them and some don't, it just depends. AP credits can get you out of a lot of your freshman classes and open up spots to start working on whatever major you want to do
