Are School Uniforms Recommended?
Imagine a hallway, crowded with students, all wearing the same colors, the same designs. School uniforms are clothes the school dictates us to wear and helps us blend in with our peers. Did you know that 25 percent of schools have either dress codes are uniforms for their students to wear? This issue is controversial because different people believe differently on what is or is not okay with what they can be forced to do. Some may say that school uniforms limit student’s right to dress freely, however, others may also say that dress codes and uniforms keep students and teachers safe.
Many people believe that school uniforms are harmful because it encourages race and gender discrimination, limits freedom of expression, and staying at the line of certainty and familiarity. One may think, for starters, that uniforms have negative effects because they help enlarge the discrimination of gender and race. An article states, “Dress codes like this are abundant and are too often used to promote race and gender discrimination, sending the message that students who come from diverse backgrounds do not being in school.” (Duchesneau) This shows how some may think that dress codes help encourage racial inequality because students may not be allowed to wear items that hold religious belief or other examples. Furthermore, some believe that uniforms are unfavorable because they restrict a students right of expression. According to a text written in a student’s perspective, “I don’t want a uniform or a dress code that sets limits on what I can wear; that would make me feel bland and robotic. Instead, I relish the chance to reveal my individuality through my clothing” (Wang). This illustrates how many others may believe that dress codes and school uniforms are disagreeable because students should be allowed to wear whatever they wish, as long as it is appropriate. Finally, one can also argue that school dress codes and uniforms are distressing because they keep things familiar. An author wrote, “ Our outfits are never considered distracting— they’re more like inspiration for other kids to step out of their comfort zones and express themselves as well.” This is evidence to those who believe that school uniforms are good that restrictions actually are not beneficial, preventing kids from stepping out of their comfort zones.
Although there are many reasons to oppose dress codes and uniforms, it can be clearly argued that they do have a tremendous positive effect because it promotes equality, improves academic achievement, and lowers gun violence. To begin, some may claim that dress codes are beneficial because they promote equality. As directly stated in the article, “Eighty-eight percent of the parents thought the code reduced teasing between boys and girls. Eighty-four percent felt the uniform code promoted equality between the sexes. Perhaps most revealing was the fact that 80 percent of the girls and 62 percent of the boys reported liking to wear uniforms'' (Wilder). This example confirms that, although some may say it helps increase discrimination, it is clearly proven by data that it actually helps discourage sexism and racism. Additionally, school uniforms are undeniably favorable addition schools should add because it helps raise academic performance. According to the text, school uniforms “help(ing) students concentrate on academics and aiding in recognition of intruders'' (Wilder). This indicates that uniforms help students not be stressed about what they are wearing, using more energy on their academic success. Lastly, dress codes are unquestionably good for schools because it lowers the chance of violence. According to the article, “The National School Board Association estimates that approximately 135,000 guns are brought to America’s 85,000 public schools each day. This is one reason school districts use to implement dress codes. Some schools even require students to have the beltline exposed at all times for fear of guns concealed under clothing” (Wilder). This exemplifies that wearing uniforms helps keep kids in line and not show acts of violence.
In summation, while it is true that school uniforms may restrict so freedoms, yet, it is also true that safety is most important and should be the priority. When everyone wears the same colors and designs, it makes everything more organized and helps lower the chance for students to get bullied at school.
