if the poems are famous then you can get help online
like CliffsNotes where they can break the whole thing down so you can understand it better

don't use regular ballpoint or felt tip pens at first, you'll want to use a pen or marker with an edge. also, are you doing modern calligraphy/handlettering or western calligraphy? for handlettering i would recommend first getting your cursive script perfect - you want to be able to consistently shape all of your letters around the same width and height. then, practice using markers. i started out using regular crayola markers because honestly they were the easiest choice for me. make sure that when you're practicing your script, you want clean strokes going up, and thicker strokes going down. you can find a lot of practice worksheets online and there are plenty of youtube videos with tips and tricks. for western calligraphy, i'd suggest using highlighters or other markers with a chisel tip. there are plenty of guides out there on how to form the letters and what you need to keep in mind ie ligatures, kerning, etc, but i wouldn't worry too much about the specifics just yet. i know that a lot of guides also recommend that you buy fancy calligraphy pens, and while that is good if you're trying to do it professionally, i personally feel that you can create nice calligraphy without the use of special nibs or pens, it's all about using a pen that you can use comfortably, especially since it's quite difficult to keep ink flow and thickness under control when you're just starting out, which can undermine how confident you feel while handlettering for the first time. overall, though, i would say that the most important thing is to practice :D show your work to others if you're feeling confident and get constructive criticism. no one starts out perfect at this and the best way to improve is to keep practicing and encouraging yourself to try out different scripts, letters, styles, etc. it's really fun, so even though there is some work involved, i hope you're enjoying yourself :)
