Jim Vuksic 55 years after To Kill a Mocking Bird was published, author Harper Lee has released the sequel Go Set a Watchman for publication by Penguin Random House.

Ms. Lee actually wrote Go Set a Watchman first, but never sought publication. It takes place 20 years after the time period featured in To Kill a Mocking Bird, which was published in 1960 and sold 40 million copies.

To Kill a Mocking Bird is narrated as seen through the eyes of a young girl, the daughter of the main character, Atticus Finch. Her name is Jean Louise, but her father and everyone else in town always call her "Scout".

In the sequel, Jean Louise Finch is all grown up and returns to her southern hometown after spending many years in New York.

Author Harper Lee, now 88 years old, was finally convinced by her publisher and friends to release the long hoped-for sequel. Ms. Harper only consented to allow To Kill a Mocking Bird to be released in e-book format last year. She certainly knows her own mind and insists upon doing things her way. My kind of woman!

Rhiannon (RhiannonWellman) | 16 comments That's very cool. I remember reading To Kill a Mocking Bird in school, my class only got about half way through the book. I read it twice and loved it. I can't wait to see Scout all grown up

Kathy Cohen | 39 comments I can't wait to read it. If it's half as good as "To Kill a Mockingbird" it'll still be wonderful.

Kirsten Feldman (goodreadscomkirsten_feldman) Go Set a Watchman is being published after her death, and from everything I've heard, against her wishes. It's all about the all-mighty dollar. My thumbs down, way down.

Though restricted to a wheel chair, legally blind, extremely hard of hearing, and suffering from occasional bouts of dementia, Ms. Harper is still very much alive and and as able as can be expected for a woman of her age - 88 years old. As the author, and still living, Ms. Harper holds the copyright to her work and signed a release for publication in the presence of her attorney and agent. Go Set a Watchman is scheduled to be released in 6 months. 2 million copies are being printed for the initial round of publication. There is no indication that Ms. Harper will not be around to accept the first copy off the press.

While technically alive, your description of her doesn't inspire me to believe that she even knows what is happening. I'm going to keep my memories of a beloved book intact and avoid the hoopla. http://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2015...

Jim Vuksic Only those directly involved in the decision to publish the manuscript Go Set a Watchman as originally written by Ms. Lee know the facts behind that decision. All we readers can do is offer up conjecture, assumptions, and subjective opinions - all of which are based soley upon personal feelings, hearsay, and pure instinct. It is a done deal!

Those who wish to obtain a copy and read the book, upon its release on July 14, 2015, will do so. Those who don't, won't.

Loukia Borrell | 11 comments What strikes me the most about Harper Lee's forthcoming novel, is that all these years there was a manuscript out there waiting to be discovered. It serves as inspiration to other writers not to get rid of stories you've written but haven't been able to publish. They could lead somewhere, even years from now.

I resurrected The Seahorse Tale which was originally written for NaNoWriMo about 2002. It had some serious editing over the years, a change of gender for the Rainbow Serpent and some tweaking this year. If you would like to review it for free, pls email me at
