This was an unusual book in the fact that although the series is named after the two detectives Benz and Montoya they nearly took a secondary role throughout. Their descriptions weren't all that flattering and neither were their police skills till towards the end. But there were enough small things scattered throughout especially about Bentz that I think I'll get to like them as the series progresses.
I agree with Lisa on this one. If I hadn't known that the series would eventually be about them, I would have thought they were overworked and apathetic.
Yes, I was also surprised that they were secondary characters here as the series bears their name. However, as I am a huge fan of Lisa Gardner's Quincy/Rainie and D.D. Warren series, which starts out in the same way, I got over this pretty quickly. Another interesting element was the age gap between the two men. For some reason, I thought they would both be in their early thirties rather than a rookie and a more experienced veteran.
Bentz is actually the more appealing of the two as he is more seasoned and serious and seems to be more on the ball when it comes to investigative skills. Montoya is an arrogant rookie who actually annoyed me on occasion. The fact that he is a smoker also turned me off a bit.
Actually, the series name is New Orleans here on Goodreads and the author’s website, though they are tagged as being the feature.
There wasn’t a lot about them that stood out, just competent but average. I know enough to have questions about them but they were truly secondary characters in the story.
Lauren, I had the same series comparison to Gardner’s series. It was almost identical in how another couple was the main attraction. But I kind of missed the age gap.

It reminded me a little of Kay Hooper's Bishop series. I kept waiting to meet Bishop but he would jump in and out of the story.

Jonetta wrote: "So that went beyond the first book?"Book #3 in the Bishop series has Bishop as the main character. He is a supporting character in all the other books in the series.
Jonetta wrote: "So that went beyond the first book?"Are you asking about Bishop? If so, yes it went on for a couple books if I remember correctly.
Lauren, Isn't there a second series with the "Bishop" team. I need to go back and look at those books.

The current cover says it’s the first Rick Bentz & Reuben Montoya novel!

I liked both Bentz and Montoya. Bentz as the veteran who has seen a lot, had a bit of trouble and has to reinvent himself and his career in a new city and Montoya as the younger cop with an attitude. It will be interesting to see where the series takes them. When Bentz is asked to follow up with Sam regarding her threatening calls, he has just gotten the first murder and resents having to take time from a "real" case to deal Sam's problem. I don't know if their attitude had anything to do with how long it took to make the connection, they really didn't have much that linked to two.
