First impressions were that she was a thoughtful colleague and friend to Sam. But as the plot unfolded the reader learns more about her especially her ambition and how she is unsatisfied with her role at the station and it was then that alarm bells rang for me that she could be somehow involved in the case.
I never trusted Melanie not even when Sam mentioned that she house sat for her. Perhaps I've read too many books were the so-called colleague/friend/assistant has turned out to be an obsessive, jealous, ambitious sociopath.
I had misgivings about her, too, Lauren, from the onset. Her attitude came across as insincere and the cheeriness forced. I never thought I was seeing the true Melanie and it was beyond a coincidence that Sam’s troubles started after her house sitting. She was always on my radar.
She is another character that set off the spider senses. I wondered about her from the start. I didn't know how involved she was in everything going on, but I knew she was a backstabbing co-worker who was playing at being a friend.
Jonetta wrote: "I don’t know what it is but I can always tell the difference between the two."Every word out of Melanie's conniving mouth made me cringe. There's a character. like her in one of Karen Rose's books. The one with the jealous childhood friend planning on killing the heroine.
Lauren wrote: "Every word out of Melanie's conniving mouth made me cringe. There's a character. like her in one of K..."
I kept looking for reasons to change my opinion of Melanie. She never gave me one.
