David didn't seem a strong enough character to be the serial killer. He seemed kind of insipid from Sam's descriptions and thoughts.
It was so early in the story, that I suspected everyone. In this type of story, if the author goes for a twist, then it could end up being anyone.
There were many potential suspects. So many people in Sam's life had questionable attitudes toward her. That said, David was pretty low on my suspect list.
I have no explanation for why David didn’t show up as a strong suspect in my mind from the start. I did, however, believe he might have had something to do with the boat incident.
I took David as a person who was full of himself, but I didn't think he was the murderer. I'm not sure why because he could be if the story went in another direction.

I know he could have sent it from Mexico, but this just didn't jive with his personality.
