E I just heard the news about a long lost manuscript written before TKAM about scout in her 30s , "Go set a watchman". THOUGHTS???

Robbie I KNOW IT'S CRAZY. I AM STUNNED AND SCARED AND THRILLED. Everyone's going to want to read it oh gosh I hope it's good.

Robert Wright I'm glad it's coming out now, when it is Harper Lee's choice. Too many authors' estates posthumously publish things that the author probably had a reason for not doing so.

Peggy King Can't wait! I always hoped she'd publish another book!

Gavin Wait, what? The most unexpected sequel ever.

Jeanne Here is a link to a great article about Harper Lee's soon to be released book.

It's not really a sequel. It was written BEFORE TKAM and the manuscript had been forgotten about. It is being marketed as a sequel only because it has Scout as an adult, dealing with similar issues in the same locale. Don't get your hopes up.

Adela I'M EXCITED GEEZ A LONG TIME AFTER

message 10: by Will (new) - rated it 5 stars

Will Once I just hope it's not going to be another situation like the Catch 22 sequel. Other than that, I'm as excited as it's possible for mortal man to be without exploding.

Charley Ahhh! Much excite!

message 12: by Lucy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lucy Walton When I first heard this I thought it was too good to be true. it had to be a joke. But after reading the same headline on 4 different websites I truly believed it. I almost cried I was so happy. I'm just a bit scared that it will only bring down TKAM but since it took Lee so long to release this i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

message 13: by Danielle (last edited Feb 03, 2015 03:15PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Danielle It took me about 2 months to finish it for a research topic...now they're releasing a sequel? I enjoyed TKAMB...I just thought it ended fine as a stand alone..

message 14: by Jen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jen Sabo I absolutely loved it as a stand alone. There was something powerful in the fact that she only had one story to tell and she told it. Yet, I am thrilled that another one is coming out, especially since it was written long ago so it will probably be in the same spirit.

On one hand, it worries me that people will criticise it and the bok will end up being a flor. Yet, I can't wait to get more of Scout and, hopefully, more of Atticus!

message 15: by Kat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kat Dullum I think this is awesome news! Since it is set nearly 25 years later, my guess is it will be a stand alone story and not a continuation of the original. Just a guess. Either way, it is a must read for me.

Julie Mcalpine I agree with Robert's statement that Ms Lee is releasing the book on her terms, when she wanted too. I love how she got trusted friends' comments, wondering if it was worthy! Really? Most of us can't breathe with anticipation.

message 17: by Barbara (last edited Feb 03, 2015 05:27PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Barbara I was so excited when I heard this amazing news. To Kill a Mockingbird is my all time favorite book and I have re-read it throughout the years. I can't wait to read this new book. Thank you Harper Lee!

message 18: by Marjorie (new)

Marjorie Apparently the "new" book is the one that Harper Lee wanted published in the first place but her editor was taken with the flashbacks about Scout when she was young and asked Ms. Lee to write a book from Scout's perspective, which became "To Kill a Mockingbird". "To Kill a Mockingbird" has withstood the test of time and remains a classic so I'm sure her first work will be a timeless one, too. Very excited about this news!

Bonny Really exciting...!!

Sonia Great news indeed, can't wait to read it! "To kill a Mockingbird" is in my personal "Top list" of best books ever written!

Micebyliz it's wonderful news. remember though that the author is sort of reclusive and probably won't be on the talk shows. i read that she was unsure about this novel until some who read it persuaded her that it should be published. She had thought her novel was so successful that what could she possibly write after that?
i won't mind if it's not as good because in some way it's the answers to questions we all had when we first read To Kill. What did happen to Scout and Jem? Were the police who shot Tom Robinson ever investigated or charged?

Allison Bush I'm interested to see what kind of adult Scout grew up to be. Atticus is such a strong and loving father, I'm hoping that she absorbed his lessons and wisdom. She was struggling to be her "Tomboy" self in a world that was trying to get her to become a proper young lady. I hope she was able to maintain her independent nature. I expect that she did, and I anticipate that she will be involved in the struggle for justice during the 50's - 60's. If this story was written first, I'm thinking that TKAM was written to show the roots of Scout's adult character. And that leaves me with hope that it won't be a disappointment.

Marleny Like some others have commented, I'm greatly looking forward to Ms Lee's second book but am also trepidatious. What if I don't like Scout as an adult? What if I don't like the story? What if it's a huge disappointment? There are so many possible what ifs... Of course I plan to snatch it up as soon as it comes out... I hope for the best.

Robert Wright This is likely to be more of a curiosity and a let down to those superfans of TKAM.

Remember, this was her first take on Scout's story. The editor at the time found the flashbacks to her childhood the most compelling and suggested she write about that instead. Which suggests the other pars were ...well, not so compelling.

And, as far as they say, this has sat untouched and forgotten since then. And will be published as-is, without editing or authorial polishing.

So surely of academic interest, but also just as surely to disappoint those looking for as fully realized a snapshot of the characters later in life as we had in TKAM.

Better to approach it with modest expectations.

Yes, I agree! I have also heard that her sister was her lawyer for most of her life but recently died and her law firm has taken over. I'm worried that Harper Lee didn't really want this book published but is now being taken advantage of by others in her old age. I will certainly read the next book but am keeping my expectations in check.

Susan I too am eager to read this new book. I have it on hold at my local library. Over the years I have read "To Kill A Mockingbird" many, many times and always there are new insights and lessons to be learned.

message 28: by Sye (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sye It's not a sequel considering it was written before TKAM. TKAM derived from Go Set a Watchman. That being said, I'm excited to read a book with Scout as an adult. Nonetheless, I have reservations considering there's no clarity on whether or not Harper Lee knowingly gave her consent to have this novel published. If that issue is resolved, I will gladly pick up a copy. If not, I'll settle for reviews/summaries of the work out of respect to Harper Lee.

Susan Sierra, I am in agreement with you on that. I was not aware that there is some question of Harper Lee possible not giving her consent. But I am confused by what you said about Go Set A Watchman being written before TKAM if it is about Scout as an adult that doesn't make sense to me.

message 30: by Sye (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sye Susan wrote: "But I am confused by what you said about Go Set A Watchman b..."

As the story goes from the publisher and records from Harper Lee, she wrote Go Set a Watchman and initially presented that to the publishers of TKAM. The publisher liked the flashbacks of Scout so much that they encouraged her to write an entire novel centered on them. That's how TKAM happened.

Susan Sierra, thank you so much! It is always good to know how books come about.

Tanya i heard about it via my lit teacher!!! i am sooooooo excited!! when does it come out?

Olivia Lacerra it comes out in june i think i can't wait

Susan Might be a good time to refresh our memory by reading To Kill A Mockingbird again.

Tanya yeah. i loved that book.

Duane uh-oh... For some reason I immediately thought of a joke that made the rounds after John Denver starred in that movie "Oh God"... people were saying that if he made a sequel, it should be called "Oh God, Not Again"

message 37: by Duc (new) - rated it 4 stars

Duc OMG MOST UNEXPECTED SEQUEL EVER. How can I wait until July?

Micebyliz Susan wrote: "Might be a good time to refresh our memory by reading To Kill A Mockingbird again."
i agree. it's not hard to remember how bad things were..a different time, yet so relevant today.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Someone up top said, "Don't get your hopes up." Seriously? We're getting another piece of art from Harper Lee. How can one NOT get his/her hopes up?

Duane People who write "Sequels" should be put on a Government surveillance list. (I'd let Harper Lee off on this one though, because it wasn't really a "Sequel"...).

In the same vein, though, Hollywood producers who "remake" movies, on the other hand, should just be taken out and summarily executed by a CIA hit squad.

Bianca I am really excited! Scout and Atticus are two characters that I could easily read more about.

Micebyliz http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015...
although i read in the NYT someone's comment? that her late sister said she was infirm. (my words) now i don't know what to think, but i am still pleased the novel is being published and hopefully the Guardian article is correct.

Allie I'm really curious to see how similar the plot is to TKAM since it is what she originally wrote, before it was changed to a young Scout's perspective

Libby SO COOL. TKAM is one of my favorite books of all times! I think I will reread it now

Micebyliz i'm sorry there is so book much controversy about this book, i hope it clears up soon.

Annna OMG I'M SO HAPPY
