No, especially since Gabe was his best friend.
I questioned it, but I'm wondering if Maddox is very good at separating areas of his life. I think he is involved in covert activities. I worked for bosses who talked a lot about work related activities, even feelings about work, but I knew very little about their personal life.

At first, it seems strange, but in hindsight it is clear that Maddox deliberately kept her separate from the rest of his life. He was trying to protect her.
I should probably finish the book before starting to comment or discuss. Just reached 25%.I did wonder about that. The whole time she is saying they were friends. And the person she saw was not what others did. What he showed the world is also so different from how she saw him. Surely she would have done some snooping on the internet of some of the people he was talking about. Just to put a face to the name.
But then I agree with Lauren and Jonetta. Maddow kept her separated from his life for a reason. Even going so far as to play up to the media so they won't be privy to this.
Anyway. Will come back to this question when I've read a bit more. But this soon into the book it's all suspect. Could also be that we are living in a different time than when this book first came out.

I saw that Jonetta. Thank you. I've read this book but way back when it first came out. I can't remember it as well as I thought I did. I read question C and thought let me finish it before I start taking part in the discussion.
For some reason I never thought her relationship with Mad was anything more than friendship. I wondered why and thought they must be related or with his reputation, he would have hit on her.

I didn't think sister or relative until it was revealed.

I agree, Anita. Given Mad's reputation, one would expect him to hit on Everly if he weren't related to her.
I never thought she was more than friends with Mad. She didn't give the impression from the beginning that it was anything more than that. I guess I looked at it from my personal experience. I had a really close friendship with a male co-worker who ultimately became my boss. We continued our friendship until he died. So I believed her from the beginning that it was just friendship.
