I'm kind of down the middle with this one.

I love holding a real book and turning real pages. And I can use my bookmarks. I will always prefer a real book over my kindle.

However, I appreciate my kindle when I am at work. It's easier and lighter to carry in my bag. Plus, in a pinch I can just read on my phone. I have found some books that I want to read are hard to find in paper, but available on my kindle. I have been known to forget my book at home and buy it again for my kindle so I don't have to wait.

Jon (aguywhopatsdogs) As much as I love the feel and texture of a physical book, I'd have to say I'm all in on E-readers. Receiving a Kindle Paperwhite as gift got me back into reading after a multiyear hiatus. Like you mentioned, it's so convenient! I keep it in my bag and have access to every book imaginable while at work or on the go. I also really enjoy the connectivity with goodreads. Tapping the "share" button and watching my "percent complete" go up is super fun.

I have the paperwhite, too. I got it for work but then I saw they have the one that glows and I thought that would be perfect when I'm in bed almost ready to sleep and I don't want to get back up to turn the light off. So, I have that one too.

Brandy S I need a paper book. Something electronic would not survive me. I drag a book everywhere with me so they typically show all the marks of my life: soda or syrup splashes on a page, tooth marks on a corner where one of the rescues "helped" me read, mud streaks where a dog knocked it off the deck, wavy pages where it hit the bathtub and went through the blow drier. Paper for me, always. And personal preference, I hate hardbacks!

They sound like well loved books. I always think I prefer hardbacks but once I get a paperback in my hands, it's love and I wonder why don't I prefer these?

Pamela | 18 comments I still love real books best and don't enjoy ebooks. To me, I need to hold the book and smell the print. There is nothing that can replace a real book. I still have all of my childhood books, and I have not been a child in many looong years!

You are right, nothing beats that smell. I have all my children's books and even my own books from my childhood. I like feeling like I live in a library. I have shelves in just about every room filled with books.

I don't have children, except for my cats. They are my babies! I know all about having bookcases in every room...not to mention the stacks of books on the floor in front of the bookcases. I live in an old Victorian house with large rooms, all full of books! Even my kitchen is full of vintage cookbooks. The original 1950 Betty Crocker cookbook is my favorite. Nobody cared about calories or cholesterol back then!😉

HAHA I was thinking how ingredients must have evolved. Yes, I'm at the stage where stacks are forming. I am thinking about where to put my next bookcase... and the exciting part of that is the excuse to fill that up!!

Michelle For me, real books win! After working all day on the computer, I would much rather sit with an actual book than an e-reader. I also like to browse at the bookstore too much to add to my never ending TBR shelves 😀

It's fascinating to think about how people prepared foods in the past or how they ever figured out how to make basic things like bread, or which vegetables to eat. I have always thought that the person who ate the first egg was quite brave. Think about that! Rather unappetizing! 🐔🥚🍳😳

I have a collector's edition of the 1896 Fannie Farmer Cookbook. It was the fist time specific measurements were used in recipes. Very interesting read. Fannie suffered a stroke at the age of 16 and developed recipes while she was recovering. She was an amazing woman!

Molly Smiles (mollysmilesreads) I love all forms. I listen on audible for when I’m driving, i have my kindle and kindle app for when I’m reading in bed (I have a cat who is REAL picky about lights being on when it’s bed time) and I have physical books to fill up my bookshelves so that I might one day live the dream I’ve had since I was 9 and have a library like Belle from beauty and the beast.
What I love about physical books is the ease of being able to annotate, see the annotation from the moment I pick up the book, and the ease it is to flip to what I annotated.

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney film. I loved that Belle always had a book in hand and I could relate to her character!

RAVEN | 2 comments today I can say am both. I love the feel of book in my hand, I enjoy the kindle on my phone as well. I see it either way I will always have a book on me. but for Christmas I got the kindle Oasis and it took me a bit to get used to. today I enjoy reading from that just as much as holding the book. right now I have a book going on Kindle and one paperback. ☺️

A Kindle Oasis? I am intrigued. I got a kindle paperwhite for when I am working in the OR but I hate getting up to turn off my light when reading in bed, so I broke down and got the kindle with the backlight for nighttime reading. I hate to admit I am a kindle collector but I think that's what's happening.

Pamela | 18 comments I don't have a Kindle, but was just talking to a neighbor yesterday about that. She just started reading with Kindle and says she really enjoys it! I guess I should look into it. My neighbor told me that there are many books that are only availabe as ebooks...as if I don't have enough books on my TBR list! Unless I live to be about 300 years old, I doubt I'll ever catch up on my reading!😄

HAHAHA! That's how I feel with my TBR list. I was thinking I should retire early to off-set.

I looked into the Kindle Oasis... I want the Kindle Oasis. It has buttons to turn the pages and it looks easier to hold!!!! And it has that back light!! It has made it's way into my cart.

I started the process of trading in my other kindles...

lacy white (ravensandlace) While I absolutely love the feeling of real book and I'll always prefer them, my Kindle has been so nice to have. I can lay in bed and watching Ink Master while reading my Kindle in the dark.

Plus, I feel like I read so much faster on my kindle. Does anybody else feel that? lol.

I feel like I am slower because I can't appreciate my progress until I hit 50% then I feel like I'm back to my normal speed.

Jakob Sandahl | 13 comments I mainly read in the evenings in bed, and always on my cell phone. I thought at first that the screen light would mess with my sleep but since I have night setting on it doesn't. If I read during the day though I prefer a paper book.

When desperate, I'll read on my phone but it is not my favorite. I noticed I go through phases. Right now it's audiobooks.

message 26: by alyssa (new)

alyssa i love reading actual books because i can annotate and feel the pages on my fingers but i also love the convenience of swiping on an app. i read many books for free on my local library’s ebook app and i do like how fast i can finish them, but i usually only read them at night. since i’m the most active at night, i do prefer ebooks a tiny fraction more than paper books.

I completely agree. There are positives for all forms of reading. I think my preference is what suits my mood or situation at that moment. But that's where I can get into trouble. I have a habit of starting with a paper book but if I have a long drive ahead of me and I don't want to stop the story, I easily justify buying it on audible or if I can't fit the book in my purse but my kindle app is right there and it's so easy to hit the purchase button... I end up with so many duplicates. I feel no guilt!
