For years, I could not find this book because I forgot its title

The book I am looking for is one I must have read in 2005. It might be from a British author. It is about a couple and another couple competing, who can give better presents (to each other). I remember that the main character is a man, whos job is to translate manuals for household items. I also remember that the other couple is made out of 2 guys, whom are proving to be much better at coming up with ideas for gifts.

Can anyone please tell me the title of this book?
