The Giver
question
What is a prediction for The Giver? What do you think will happen next?
Last year, I had a project we had to do on this so I'll just retype it;
Jonas stared at the village in front of him. Many thoughts hit him What is the source of the music? What are those lights from the window mean? What other discoveries are hidden in this village? Jonas started going to the village with a worried Gabriel in his hands. As he entered, Jonas was baffled at everything and was hard to take it all in. The lights were hung on people's houses, candles were lit in every window, and various groups of people went around signing pretty songs that made Jonas feel welecommed. When he and Gabriel were taking this all in, a boy with a jacket came towards them.
"Are you new here?" asked the boy. "I don't remember seeing you here before."
"My name is Jonas and I come from Elsewhere with my Newchild Gabriel," replied Jonas.
"Elsewhere? Newchild?" responded the boy. "What does that mean?"
"Elsewhere means..." Jonas paused trying to think of a meaning, "somewhere far away and Newchild means..." Another pause, "well, it's another word for baby," finished Jonas.
"Oh. My name is George." He turned to Gabriel, "And what is your name?"
"Gay Gay," cheerfully responded Gabriel at the sudden center of attention.
"It's actually Gabriel," said Jonas smiling, "we ran away from our Community."
George, suddenly curious, asked why.
Jonas thought to himself, should I try trust this stranger? He decided on a yes.
Everything came pouring out of Jonas's mouth. How he ran away, the memories, how everything was the same and no differences, how lots of other people in his community couldn't see colors, and about signing up for a release . About how each person had a family unit, how everyone was assigned a job at Tweleve, how Jonas was special and chosen to be a Receiver of Memory, and how he began to see colors. In exchange, George told Jonas all about his village. How they're allowed to have as many children as they want, how some families have a person in their family who goes to war to help protect their village and beyond , how everyone can pick their own jobs whenever they went, how they go to a supermarket to get whatever they need to eat and then how they pay with money, all the other villages and beyond, and how some people die from old age or another tragic accident. Jonas was fascinated at ow they had their own freedom but hated some other things. George was fascinated at how they had no war but hated some thing like no choices.
After exchanging very different communities, George offered, "Would you like to go on a tour of our village?"
Jonas replied yes.
George showed Jonas and Gabriel the whole village with George talking and talking. Although Jonas listened and was interested, he thought, will he ever run out of breath? George showed them carolers who sung songs, the local church, a supermarket, antique shops, schools, regular stores, various fast-food places, malls, and houses. Jonas noticed that along the way, there were things that looked like a bus but smaller. He asked what they were and George replied that they were cars. The smell of these cars made Jonas cough a lot. Snow fell from the sky and made Jonas cold. George must have noticed because he asked if he was alright. Jonas told him how he was cold. George then asked suddenly, "Would you like to come to my house?"
Jonas replied, "Please. I'm so cold; I just wish it would go away."
George quickly led Jonas to his home which wasn't that far . His home was decorated with lights, candles in each window, a big circle of leaves and twigs hanging on the door, and a blow-up of a man with red and white clothes with an animal that looked like a moose. When Jonas and Gabriel entered this big and beautiful house, he took two minutes to take everything in. There was a tree in one corner of the walls, a fireplace with socks hanging above it, and a family sitting around it with cups in their hands. There was a mother, a father, a bored older girl chewing something and with a device in her hand, a smaller baby boy the size of Gabriel, a girl about the size of Lily, and two grandparents which the Giver had once explained to him. Jonas was bewildered by all of this and the family stared at him which made him uncomfortable. Finally, the older girl said, "What happened to you?" Jonas didn't know what she meant until he looked down at himself. His clothes were ragged, he was strangely thin, and his skin was unnaturally red.
Luckily for him, George spoke up and told the whole story about how Jonas ran away. The mother ashed in a welcoming voice, "Would you like to stay here for the night?" Jonas replied yes immediately. Then the younger girl said, "Are you gonna live with us?" Out of habit, Jonas corrected, "Going to"
The father said, "Well I don't know if we're going to ask him into our family yet; I need to talk it out with Mommy."
"I can't wait for tomorrow; that's when Santa comes to our house and brings us presents!" suddenly exclaimed the younger girl. She then turned to Jonas, "By the way, my name is Rosemary, this is my older sister Emily, " and then she turned to the baby, "And this is cute little David."
Jonas was shocked at what the girl said. Her name is Rosemary. Rosemary. Rosemary. Rosemary . Her name echoed in Jonas's mind. But Jonas was too sleepy to think much about it. He asked George where he can sleep for the night. He led him to the guest room and Jonas collapsed on the bed.
The next morning Jonas woke up to the sound of laughter. Everyone was ripping presents up from under the tree which has magically appeared under it. Everyone was saying "Merry Christmas!" and having fun. There were even four presents for Jonas. Gabriel was playing with David. Everyone was happy and had fun. Even Emily was smiling. The mother and father came up to Jonas and said that he was welcomed to live there. Jonas smiled and said, "Yes, I would be pleased to do so."
Sorry it was so long. I appreciate anyone who took time away from whatever they were doing to read this.
