"I was born here in Paris," Barbara said, giving a small nod. "My parents had me very young. My mother especially loved Paris so I grew up here. My mother and father moved overseas once my father's job required him to but I stayed behind." She knew she could have moved with them, but in that point of her life she just didn't feel like she could. She had to stay back here where she was trying to get the rest of her life figured out; going to school, getting a job, and maybe finding someone to marry. And maybe after all of that she would move out to see her parents again. She did visit them occasionally but it was very expensive for a ticket to take a spot on a ship. Besides, it would be lonely.

Richard nodded with a smile from her words about her past. "Huh, that is interesting. Where are your parents now? In America or Asia, or Africa?" He asked curiously. "I was born in the states. I would tell you where but I doubt you would know much about American geography just as I know little of France. My mother was a school teacher and my father was a war correspondent. when World war Two happened, he was sent here and took photos of it all. It is what got me interested in film. Who knows, maybe he took a photo or movie of you?" He said with a smile. Then he sighed. "So how did the war treat you?" He asked her curiously, wondering if she remembered anything of it, or if she was too young.

message 53: by [deleted user] (new)

"They are over in America!" Barbara said. "I do not know much about the American states, unfortunately. Do your parents still live in America where you are from?" she asked. The war had ended a long time ago, when her own parents were young adults, so she had been much too young to remember much. "I was too young. But I heard my parents talk about it sometimes. They would tell me small bits about it when I asked. Mostly I could see the stress lines on their faces. What about you? How did it affect you?"

Richard nodded with a smile as she told him that her family lived in America. He then nodded as she asked about his family. "Yes my parents still live in the Midwest." He says then nodded from her talk about the war. "It was far away for me. I had my father leave for it when I was young. Luckily he came back, others weren't as lucky." He said as they walked to her apartment.

message 55: by [deleted user] (new)

"My parents live in...the east," Barbara said after thinking a moment. She really needed to visit them again someday. She'd write a letter to send to them and a mail ship could take it. "Yes. That is the sad reality about war. I am glad you were young, too. Otherwise our lives would have been disrupted so much more." They had arrived at her apartment by now and she lived on the second floor. The building looked old, but some flowers grew out front around some shrubs. "Here we are. I am A12," she said, pointing. She smiled shyly at him and fixed her skates. "Thank you. I had fun tonight. I will see you in class tomorrow?" She asked. Then once they split up she headed up to her door and slipped inside, locking it for the night.

Richard nodded from her words. "Yes, well I can see why it would be so much more intense for you because the Germans were hear. I was nowhere near war." He said with a nod. "Maybe someday we would visit your parents." He told her happily then stopped with her as they arrived. "I am glad you had fun. I will see you at class and hopefully after." Richard then went home to his barracks and then did his nightly rituals. Then woke up and went through the day like he would any other day. He went to class and this time he was looking for Barbara, as he was excited to see her again.

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara had just gotten to class and was sitting down in her seat beside a few other students. She saw Richard and shyly waved to him. Unfortunately they couldn't go sit together but once class was over, they could talk. Class wasn't very long but it was interesting. When it finished, she packed her things away and stood, heading to the door after thanking the teacher. She wasn't busy after and she paused to see if Richard wanted to go to get lunch while they waited for their next class.

Richard smiled as he saw Barbara enter the class and wave at him. He waved back to her with a happy smile. Once class was over, he packed his bag full of his things and got up and left the classroom. He waited outside in the hallway for Barb. "So did you want to grab some lunch before our next classes? Maybe go on a short picnic?" He asked her with a caring smile, wanting to know more about her. Though he was afraid he was being too forward and fast with her. He was always told that women liked it when men were distant.

Barbara met Richard in the hall. "We could go get sandwiches at that deli place across from the school," she suggested. She actually was hoping that he'd agree because she was enjoying his company, as shy as she was acting herself. "I don't mind." She shrugged, and the two of them began walking side by side towards the doors of the school.

Richard smiled as Barb met him in the hall. "Great and yeah I would love to go to the Deli with you. Maybe I am wrong for saying this but I am enjoying my time with you." He said to her with a smile then walked with her out of the school and over to the Deli. "I have never been here before. What would you recommend?" He asked her with a smile and lightly took her hand in his and held it. He was just happy to be with her again.

message 61: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 26, 2021 05:24PM) (new)

Barbara shyly shook her head. She did not think it was wrong for him to enjoy her company. Besides, she was feeling the same way and was also enjoying his company. As they got in line at the deli and stared at the menu, Barbara felt his hand slip cautiously into hers. She smiled a bit, finding that she did not mind holding hands with him. "Well, I usually have a chicken salad sandwich but there are many choices. There is ham and cheese, swiss, bacon, whatever type of sandwich you like, almost." She gestured at the menu. "Or, if you do not want a sandwich, we have very good soup or pasta."

message 62: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard nodded from the options she gave him. "Well you will have to not judge me too harshly if I get an ham and cheese and some soup." He said with a smile then went up and ordered the food. He also ordered and apple juice with his food. Then he took her to a lunch table and waited for their sandwiches. "So any plans for the day?" He asked her with a happy smile. Gently caressing and rubbing her hand he held. He wanted to know more about her but did not know what to ask.

message 63: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara walked over to the table with him and sat down across from Richard. She smiled at him. "Not really," she admitted. "I haven't thought much about it. It was just school, lunch, and then whatever. What about you?" She asked while they waited for their lunch to arrive. The waiter would bring it over. Meanwhile, she looked down at their hands. She hoped hers wasn't cold because often her hands were and it was a bit awkward.

Richard smiled and nodded from Barbs soft words. "Yeah, it is school then work for me. I usually do my homework while on duty. Being a guard is boring." He said with a laugh. Soon their sandwiches were done and he left her for a moment to stand up and go grab their sandwiches. "So do you want to eat them here? Or go outside and enjoy them under our tree?" He asked her with a happy smile. All the while he was thinking of more date options. Maybe minigolf? Maybe a movie? Maybe board games?

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

"You don't get in trouble doing that?" Barbara looked surprised. What if something happened and he was busy working on homework to catch or see whatever was the issue in time? She knew that she wouldn't be brave enough to risk that. "Let's go eat outside. It is so beautiful today," she said, smiling and standing up with him. She offered to take the tray of food and they walked outside together. Barbara sat down at a picnic table underneath a large tree, taking her sandwich and drink. "So, tell me more about yourself," Barb asked after she silently prayed for her meal. "What else do you do besides guard duty?"

message 66: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard chuckled happily as Barb asked him if he got in trouble. "No, Nothing usually happens so they are lax on me. And what I do is quiet beyond the typewriter. So I can still hear things out of place. The other guards just play cards." He then nodded and followed her out to the tree, he sat down and watched her silently pray. He did not usually pray but she reminded him. so he closed his eyes and prayed as well. He then chuckled from her question. "Well I am religious like yourself. I consider myself evangelical but my parents were Baptist." He said happily. "What are you?" He asked her with a smile, happy she believed in God and was not a communist.

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

"Well that's good," Barb said with a smile. She ate her sandwich, making a sound because of how delicious it was. She loved going to this deli place. "I'm a Christadelphian. I always pray for my meals because who knows where the next one comes from. I'm thankful for being able to eat." She smiled again as they ate. "You must let me pay for this date," Barbara said, putting her hand on the table.

Richard could not help but chuckle happily from the cute sound Barb made as she ate her sandwich. "What is an Christadelphian?" He asks her with a smile. He then nodded about her comment of praying. "Yeah I guess that makes sense. There are people out there who can't eat even when they need to." He says with a nod. "Well You should have told me before I ordered the sandwich I would have gotten something more expensive." He says to her playfully. "Though I am happy to be on another date with you Barb." He says with a happy smile and gently taking her hand in his.

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

"It means follower of Christ," Barb said. She nodded. "There are always so many people who are starving or hungry somewhere and I think we too often take what we do have for an advantage. We don't even deserve to be alive but we are, so we should be thankful for everything." She covered her mouth with a hand and laughed lightly. "You are too funny. You know I wouldn't have minded." She nodded, though. She too was enjoying these dates with Richard. Barb hadn't thought she'd be going on dates like this but now she was. Surprises were always around the corner. She smiled when he took her hand and rubbed it gently with her thumb. "We could do this more often."

Richard chuckled from her definition she gave him. "In America, we just called ourselves Christians." He said with a laugh. He then watched her curiously as she ranted to him to be thankful for what they have. "Well you are are right. We should be thankful for what we have. And we don't really realize what we have until it is gone. But that being said a healthy mind doesn't wake up and think it is the last day on earth. I am a guard for an embassy for one of the most hated nations. These are countless people who would slit my throat if they got the chance. That being said, I am thankful for all God provides. Who knows he might have even provided me with a nice pretty woman to occupy my time." He said teasing her lovingly. He then smiled lovingly as she rubbed his hand lovingly. "Are you sure our wallets can handle daily dates?" He says to her teasingly. "Though I would love to hang out with you more. You are fun and have my kind of values." He says to her as he smiled in her eyes.

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

"We are a little different than Christians but yes, they do have very similar meanings." Barbara listened as he explained his side of being thankful, and she nodded. "That is true. We shouldn't be worried about everything all the time because no, that isn't healthy. But it's good to remember where it all comes from." She tilted her head and finished her food, watching as Richard still ate. She blushed at his compliment. "We don't necessarily need to go and buy stuff every time or go to a place that costs money. I think that even hanging out like going to the park or the beach or wherever for free would be fun, too. But of course, only if you like doing that." She smiled at him. "Thank you. You are as well and I appreciate it."

Richard looked at her curiously as she said that they were different than Christians. "What is the difference?" He asked her curiously. He then smiled from her cute blush. "You do have the cutest blush if I do say so." He says happily. He then nodded and laughed as she spoke about the beach. "I haven't been to a beach since I was a child. I know how to swim, but I wouldn't know what to do with myself." He said to her with a laugh. "And yes, I would love to go on more dates with you. Do you want to go to the beach next? After school?" He offered her with a smile as he rubbed her hand lovingly.

message 73: by [deleted user] (new)

"Some things, like we believe we don't go to heaven when we die, and we do not agree with the Trinity, and that a supernatural devil isn't actually what makes us sin, it's our own selves that do." Barbara chuckled softly. "Thank you. You are too kind, you know. You know, I'm not a great swimmer myself, but it would be fun to walk in the sand." Her eyes lit up. "It would be fun! We should go tomorrow after school." She squeezed his hand and beamed at him. Richard was fun to hang out with and he was making her feel less shy because he was comfortable to be around.

Richard looked at her curiously as she explained her beliefs. Those were strange to him. but then he smiled as she thanked him. He then smile and nodded as she spoke about the beach. "Yeah it would be fun to just be on the sand. And yeah, I would love to go take you there tomorrow. I think you would look quite hot in a swimsuit. If I am allowed to say it." He says with a smile. She was so very pretty and fun. He soon finished his food and put the trash on the tray. "So what are the plans for today?" He asked her with a smile.

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

"I don't know, are you allowed?" Barbara stretched her arms out with a smirk across her face. "I'll pack it tomorrow. But you need to bring yours, too. And a towel." When her food was also finished she stacked it on the tray. They would need to take it inside once they were all done with sitting at the table. "I don't know. I don't have any plans. We could just walk around if you want. The weather is nice."

Richard enjoyed her teasing him instead of being offended and he too enjoyed her playful smirk. He then smiled and nodded from her words. "Ok, sure, I'll pack a bathing suit. Just be prepared for me to call you pretty all day." He says to her playfully. "But I guess we can walk and you can explain to me your funny religion." He says to her teasingly as he took the trey then stood up. He went back to the deli and returned the tray and threw out the garbage. He then waited for Barb as she paid for them.

message 77: by [deleted user] (new)

"If I am," Barbara chuckled. He could only be saying that because he was trying to be nice. It didn't mean she was. "How come you think it's funny?" She asked curiously, then went to pay inside. When she came out she started heading back to their table. Another guy around their ages walked over and threw his arm around her. "Hey, darling," he said (in French) with a big smile, and pulled her in for a kiss.
"Get away from me, you horrible man!" Barbara exclaimed (in French), shoving away from him to escape. "I will punch you!" She still spoke in French, her tone angry and upset. She tried pushing him away.

Richard chuckled from her comment about being pretty. Then again from her comment about her religion being funny. "Well the trinity has been a thing since the bible was made. It is strange to mess with it." He said with a shrug. Then he watched as a man attacked her. He ran and got in between them. Pushing the man away and of of his girl. He did his best to tell the man to leave in French but his French was not that good. He was willing to defend barb with as much force as necessary.

message 79: by [deleted user] (new)

The man yelled something rude at Richard and quickly hurried off, leaving them alone. He seemed very angry that Richard had intervened. Barbara brushed down the front of herself and huffed out a breath. "I am okay," she said finally, having switched back to English. "Thank you. That horrible man..."

Richard glared angerly at the man as he rudely spoke to the Richard. He then smiled and nodded as she told him that she was ok. "No problem. Who was that horrible man? Or does that thing happen often in France?" He said to her curiously. He gently took her hand in his and lead her back to the park where they had been and under the shade of a tree. "I am sorry that happened to you. I will protect you for so long as I am with you." He says to her lovingly.

message 81: by [deleted user] (new)

"His name is Laurent and he wanted to be my beau some years ago. When I told him no because he was too pushy, I broke his heart and he is sick inside his mind. His brain...does not work well like some?" Barbara tried explaining. It was harder to explain in English for her. "Thank you," she said with a smile, relieved that he had come to help her. "You made him go away." She sat down at the table and squeezed his hand.

Richard nodded from her words. "He sounds like a creep and I have creeps." He said with a disgusted look on his face. He then smiled and sat with her, squeezing her hand back lovingly. "I will protect you from him while I am around. Creeps just need to learn to leave you alone." He said with a sigh. "If, I get too pushy. Just tell me to step back." He said wot her with a small smile and gently rubbed her hand. He did like her, maybe even love her and he did not want to scare her away. He wanted to show his love for her but he knew if he did. She would flee him.

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

"I suppose he is a...what is the word?" Barbara asked, forgetting what the specific word he used was. She was grateful that he was here. Barb reached her free hand up and tugged on one of her curls. It was a nervous habit. Then she smiled a tiny bit at him. "I will be okay. And I will tell you if I need space. So far you have been quite the gentleman." She stared off over towards the gardens and sighed softly.

"A stalker." Richard said trying to finish her thought. He then gave a light chuckle at how ridiculous the man was. Men like him gave all men bad reputations. He then watched as she she played with her hair and that reminded him of her pretty hair. "I am glad I have been treating you well and not scaring you away. Though I do have to say, you have such pretty hair. I love your curls." He said to her lovingly as he heard her sigh. He then looked down and tried to think of what they should talk about. He wanted to know more about her but did not know what to ask.

message 85: by [deleted user] (new)

"A stalker is a creep?" Barbara asked. It wasn't like she was dumb but English wasn't her first language and sometimes some of the words were a bit confusing to her. She just wanted to be sure. "I want remember," she said, then nodded. "Yes, you are kind." She smiled and twisted a finger again in her hair. "Thank you. That is very sweet." She studied his face for a moment. "You look very nice, too."

message 86: by [deleted user] (new)

The following day after school, Barbara was waiting outside on a bench with a bag packed for the beach. She'd brought some snacks along as well as some water and her bathing suit, towel, and flip flops. She was still wearing her dress from earlier and would change. It was the perfect day because the weather was sunny and hot despite it being around September. She was excited and looking forward to hanging out with Richard.

Richard soon walked up Barb as she sat on the bench with her things. He too had his bag over his shoulder and was ready to go to the beach with her. "How is it going good lookin?" He says to her playfully. "You ready for the beach? Where are we going for the beach? I don't know of anything near by." He says wondering if they would take a small road trip to the coast and enjoy the sea. He thought it could be fun to see Normandy.

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara giggled. "I'm doing well, thank you. And how are you?" She stood and swung her bag over her shoulder again. "We have the whole rest of the day. I thought we could go over to Normandy. It is only a little bit away but it'll be fun to drive there together. Follow me." She led the way down the street and back to her apartment since she just walked to school, and up to her car. "It's an hours drive to the coast," she said. She tossed her bag in the back. "I brought sandwiches and snacks for lunch if you're interested," she said, climbing aboard.

Richard smiled happily from her sweet giggle. "I am better now that I am seeing you again." He tells her lovingly. "That is good, I think this trip will take the whole day." He then nodded and followed her down the street to her car. He then got in her car as she spoke to him. "Sandwiches and chips sound amazing. I brought some lemonade and you are welcome to have some if you want." He says to her happily. "I am glad you are driving, it is so different than in the states." He says as they started to drive to Normandy.

Barbara smiled again. "Great! Lemonade will go perfectly with our little trip." Before driving forward, she put a pair of sunglasses on and then started the car. They headed off, rolling down the pavement and heading to Normandy. She hummed while she drove, pointing out little landmarks to Richard on the way.

Richard smiled as Barb seemed to like lemonade. "Amazing. I am impressed you have had it and seem to like it. I always thought it was an American thing." He said with a laugh, then put on aviators. "You look cute in your sunglasses." He says to her lovingly. "I never knew France had so much in it." He says, impressed at how much he saw with only this short little drive. "What kind of music do you enjoy?" He asked her as he noticed she was humming.

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

"I only had it once," Barbara said with a smile. "When my parents came back to visit a few years ago they made lemonade for my to try. Very tasty. And thank you," she said with a smile. She thought a moment. "That is a hard question. I like to listen to a wide variety of musicians." She turned the car down a less busy road, one that was a long stretch in one direction

Richard smiled happily as she seemed to be enjoying his company. "Well I am glad you like it, I brought a lot of it." He says to her happily. "Well I like folk music and jazz and blues. Though I realize all of those are American music. I doubt there is anything like that over the radio here in France." He says to her with a smile. "But I suppose, I'll just have to settle with talking to you. you do hold my interest so well." He says to her playfully.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara smiled as he listed the music he enjoyed listening to. She nodded. "Some day when I go to America you will have to show me some of your favorite music. Édith Giovanna Gassion is a well known singer here. She is also an actress!" she explained. "I apologize if I do not always have lots to say. Or maybe I am not so interesting."

Richard nodded from her words. "I would love to take you to America with me some day." He told her lovingly. "Oh, do you have any songs of her? I have not heard her work." He chuckled from her comment about being boring. "No problem, I am the same way and I love staring at you. If you don't find that creepy." He said with a laugh. "So tell me about your religion. What do you believe about the trinity?" He asked her curiously, trying to remember what was different between her and Christians.

message 96: by [deleted user] (new)

"It would be fun to travel there someday," Barbara nodded. "I don't have any with me right now but she is popular." She did look surprised and turned her head to watch him for a half second before focusing on the road again. "So about the trinity. We were going to speak about this before we met Laurent, was that not true? The Trinity just really makes no sense at all to me. How could you possibly be three different beings and then all the same at the same time?" She thought a moment. "That would be like you, me, and Laurent all being the exact same person but not at the same time. It certainly baffles me."

message 97: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard smiled from her words and nodded as she spoke about travelling to America and not having her songs. He then chuckled from her example. "Well I guess a better question to start out with is Jesus The Son of God? Or was he a prophet? If he was a prophet, then we are no longer in the realm of Christianity. Now we are in the realm of Judaism or Islam. But if He is the Son of God, why would he be any less holy or divine if he alone has the power to forgive our sins?" He asks her curiously.

message 98: by [deleted user] (new)

"I believe that Jesus is the son of God," Barbara said honestly. She turned and put her signal on. "We are told that throughout the bible as well. He is holy, and he does have that power, but that power is given by God, who is his Father. But because Jesus has the Holy Spirit power given from God, that does not mean he is God. The Trinity says that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are one being. I don't see how they could be the same being but different at the same time."

message 99: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard laughed and nodded from her words. "Well this is hard to explain and I am not sure I can do it justice, but from what I know. God the father acts in heaven, God the Spirit acts in our world and God the Son was Jesus. Jesus dying on the cross to wash away our sins. The Father is not the spirit or the son. The spirit is not the father or the son. And the Son is not the Father or the Spirit. The best I can explain it is one omnipotent being acting in three different domains. Though I do wonder if your belief is similar to Arian Christians. Where they believe that since the Father gave Jesus his power that the Father is more powerful and more Holy than Jesus. Is that something that you believe?" He asked her curiously as he looked out the window in thought.

message 100: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara looked confused. "God is the son of Himself? Why would He do that?" She cocked her head. "I have never heard of Arian Christians before. My way of explaining what I believe about them is that God is the Creator of the entire universe and everything in it. His power is called the Holy Spirit. Then God chose Mary, a mortal human, to give birth to God's mortal son, Jesus. Jesus could sin like us but he did not and he had God's power, the Holy Spirit, to perform miracles. When Jesus died and was raised, then God made Jesus immortal. God and Jesus work together for the same purpose but they are not the same beings." She paused at a stop sign.
