Am I allowed to edit covers from Amazon?

Also on the subject of covers, I often find that there is a cover on Amazon, but it's a photo or a scan of the book on some kind of background, so it's not really suitable (because on Goodreads it's just the cover image that's supposed to appear).

Is it permissible to edit cover images from Amazon, i.e. to crop them out so that they fit the format here on Goodreads? (Otherwise you end up with lots of random blank space around the image, which looks terrible, and also isn't what the book actually looks like.)
