If you are joining us for our book selection, The Phone Booth at the Edge of the World, a reminder that there is an online copy available at the MPC Library.
Our main character, Yui was traveling to reach the location where the phone booth was. Many people made the pilgrimage to speak on the "un-connected" telephone to speak to their lost loved ones, with hopes of finding some relief from their pain of missing them.
Yui, was having a flashback when she had to stay at a local gymnasium after the tsunami, with others waiting for information about their missing loved ones. She remembered her mother's last message that she was on the way to a shelter with her daughter. Her mother and daughter did not survive the tsunami.
As Yui was traveling to Bell Gardia, she was thinking of what she might say on the phone to her mother and daughter. She was discovering the people who also made the phone booth their destination. Many bringing with their sadness, items of remembrance, food etc.
One man who carried a map, shared a special quote with her "Time may pass, but the memory of the people we've loved doesn't grow old. It is only we who age."
