According to this episode of the podcast Decoder Ring (https://slate.com/podcasts/decoder-ri...), one of the bookstores that possibly inspired the store in You've Got Mail was Eeyore's Books for Children, which was founded by Joel Fram. The podcast also mentions Shakespeare & Company as the bookstore that led the legal battle against Barnes & Noble and also had to close. Books of Wonder inspired the look of Meg Ryan's bookstore in the movie. I hope that helps!

I think this would have happened in the 90s, and it was related to You've Got Mail (in that the premise of the real book store closing informed the movie, I think). The book should be nonfiction.
