I never made it through Fifty Shades because of the terrible writing. If the writing is bad, and I have attempted some terribly written books, you can't get decent characters or world building. For me a plot a lone can not carry a story. You need to care about the world and the people in it. No matter the genre.
Sometimes a normally boring book can be saved by it's amazing world building and characters.

I think it's genre dependent also. Like in romance good characters will pretty much make or break the story.Whereas a mystery/thriller is all about the plot. So yeah characters and plot are both important.
Writing..ehh not so much. Unless it's too bad that I don't understand it, it's fine I guess. Good writing does have a tendency to make me forget about the plot( *looking at you The Starless Sea* ). For those of you who have read Erin Morgenstern's work would understand what I mean. Her writing is incredible but the strength of the plot is debatable.

Then I think you'd love Rosemund Hodge's writing. It's beautiful.

I remember it was huge! I still see the books at the Thriftstores all the time. Almost as much as the Twilight books. (That's how you know a series is big! Ha-ha!)
