Hey guys! What do you guys think are the most important in a book? Do you think characters are the most important, or the plot? How about the writing? Post here!

BiBookDemon All of it is important! In my opinion, the writing is the least important, though. If I can't finish a book, it's going to be because the plot sucked. Not because the writing sucked. Well, unless I couldn't understand it, lol. Soooo, I guess to me the plot is most important. It's the thing that decides if I find the story enjoyable or not, and if I would want to recommend or re-read it. I've never really had a problem with badly written characters, so I can't truly say anything about that.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments Characters, world building, plot, and most importantly writing.

I never made it through Fifty Shades because of the terrible writing. If the writing is bad, and I have attempted some terribly written books, you can't get decent characters or world building. For me a plot a lone can not carry a story. You need to care about the world and the people in it. No matter the genre.

Sometimes a normally boring book can be saved by it's amazing world building and characters.

Arundhati | 1454 comments For me it has to be the characters over plot. Like I can read a book with awesome characters but a weaker plot but not one with bad characters. I am a very character driven reader. I love getting to know my characters and see their relationships build up even if that means very slow plot progression. I don't mind it.
I think it's genre dependent also. Like in romance good characters will pretty much make or break the story.Whereas a mystery/thriller is all about the plot. So yeah characters and plot are both important.
Writing..ehh not so much. Unless it's too bad that I don't understand it, it's fine I guess. Good writing does have a tendency to make me forget about the plot( *looking at you The Starless Sea* ). For those of you who have read Erin Morgenstern's work would understand what I mean. Her writing is incredible but the strength of the plot is debatable.

Then I think you'd love Rosemund Hodge's writing. It's beautiful.

Shawna Finnigan (sugoishawn) | 945 comments Interesting and likable characters with lots of diversity is what's most important in a book for me. The plot is important but if the characters are spectacular and the plot is mediocre, I'll still like it *cough* TMR *cough*

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments Ah, okay! I wasn't a fan of TMR due to the writing. It's fun seeing what makes a book for everyone.

I remember it was huge! I still see the books at the Thriftstores all the time. Almost as much as the Twilight books. (That's how you know a series is big! Ha-ha!)
