I've now made it so that non-moderators can add groups to the bookshelf - I thought this would be fun for recommendations.

You are more than welcome to add books to the shelf, but please take note of these rules:
- mark them as 'to-read'
- mark either as 'recommended-SF' or 'recommended-fantasy', whichever is appropriate
- please don't use the other genre shelves as we'll keep those for Books of the Month
- in 'Why this book' feel free to add that you recommended it, and if you want to, a reason why you think others should read it!
- leave the rest blank

What do you think?

Sounds like a interesting idea ☺

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Can we ask for others to recommend certain kinds of books to us here? I've been looking for a good intro to steampunk (is this considered sci-fi)? So many questions.

Only Steampunk I've read was Railsea by China Mieville. It didn't impress me so possibly one to avoid if you want to get into the genre

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Will do, Paul! The only other steampunk I've read was as a sub-genre of Romance, and the steam part was quite secondary to the romance. I need something that's the opposite.

I completely agree, I was very disappointed with Railsea. I would love to experience steampunk, but that was not the book for me. It would probably make an interesting Disney movie though.

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments @Erin: I think Steampunk works very well visually, but I still haven't come up with one or two titles of books to try....

Erin. I agree on Railsea . It was an interesting enough story I could see doing well as a film .

Hey there, for steam punk check out the clockwork century series by cherie priest, first book in the series is boneshaker. It is a series of interconnected stand alone novels, but as far as steam punk goes it's pretty good. Also, I don't know of you would call it steam punk, but definitely similar is the tales of the ketty Jay series by Chris wooding. One of the funnest series I've read.

If I had to I would recommend the tales of the ketty Jay first and foremost as it is one of my favourite series I've read regardless of genre. First book is retribution falls, and in both of those series romance is not an issue or in the forefront by any means.
