May 2021 Legends Group Read

Vector Prime by R.A. Salvatore (The New Jedi Order #1)

Vector Prime (Star Wars The New Jedi Order, #1) by R.A. Salvatore

The Group read starts on May 1st.

- Book 1 of the New jedi Order series
- First published in January 1999
- Set in the era of the New Republic - 25 ABY

"Twenty-one years have passed since the heroes of the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Death Star, breaking the power of the Emperor. Since then, the New Republic has valiantly struggled to maintain peace and prosperity among the peoples of the galaxy. But unrest has begun to spread and threatens to destroy the Republic's tenuous reign.

Into this volatile atmosphere comes Nom Anor, a charismatic firebrand who heats passions to the boiling point, sowing seeds of dissent for his own dark motives. And as the Jedi and the Republic focus on internal struggles, a new threat surfaces from beyond the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim--an enemy bearing weapons and technology unlike anything New Republic scientists have ever seen.

Suddenly, Luke Skywalker; his wife, Mara; Han Solo; Leia Organa Solo; and Chewbacca--along with the Solo children--are thrust again into battle, to defend the freedom so many have fought and died for. But this time, the power of the Force itself may not be enough . . ."

Rebecca | 956 comments Still just getting into the book. This series was a plotline Lucas approved. Do you think his dislike of Mara Jade factored into giving her some deadly and incurable disease? Also, 18 pages in and I've already lost count of the number of typographical errors in this edition.

I’m not sure about Lucas’s likes/dislikes for Mara Jade. Also, May the force (fourth) be with you!

Peter Sawyer | 49 comments I'm two chapters in, and I'm really enjoying it. I've not read any of the Legend's books from this era, so it's new. I also like R.A. Salvatore. I'm excited to see where this goes.
May the Fourth be with you!

Rebecca | 956 comments I'm hoping to catch up soon. I have a library book due soon that I need to finish, and then back to this book.

Peter Sawyer | 49 comments I am on Chapter 4. I really like Jacen's concerns about Luke's desire to appease the New Republic Leadership and restart the Jedi Council. Not only does it hearken back to the problems of the Jedi getting too involved in the corruption of the Republic in the Prequel era, but it also speaks into the issue of the problem with hierarchies in top down structures and how they obstruct an individual's agency to make the best decision to solve problems on the ground.

Peter Sawyer | 49 comments I'm about 100 pages in. Really enjoying the book.
I am enjoying Anakin and Jacen's dynamic and the philosophical debate about the force.
And is there a more annoying character than Borsh Fey'lia?

Jess Saxton | 13 comments It took me a while to get into the book. There were some things early on that were interesting; Yomin Carr being one of them, as well as Jacen’s views on the responsibilities of the Jedi and what their relationship with the Force ought to be.

I hate how Mara’s illness is mentioned constantly, like he has to keep reminding you she’s sick.

I’m on chapter 14 now, and things are picking up a bit. I’m getting more into it now. I’m actually finding excuses to keep reading!

I think the Yuuzhan Vong are interesting antagonists, and will definitely present a huge challenge to our heroes.

Peter Sawyer | 49 comments I am enjoying this book. But I did not enjoy the "Running the Belt" chapter. (Spoilers below)

The movies are full of better sequences with much higher stakes. Especially Empire Strikes Back, where Han flies through an asteroid belt to escape the Imperial Fleet.

Also, it seemed like there were some inconsistencies regarding the technology. The assertion being made was that TIE Fighters were durable enough to withstand an impact with an asteroid. I know these were modified TIEs. But we probably all remember what happened to the TIEs that impacted the asteroids as they attempted to follow the Falcon into the asteroid field in Empire. Also, I think I remember in X-Wing: Rogue Squadron, it being mentioned that TIEs don't have deflector shields (At least TIE Bombers). I know that in VP, the shields were projected onto the TIEs from another ship, but this was after the TIEs had done initial runs where they had impacted the asteroids without exploding. Did I misunderstand something somewhere? Because that part really got in the way for me.

I agree. I think the Yuuzhan Vong's culture and technology (or lack thereof) is really interesting.

Jess Saxton | 13 comments Peter, I don’t know how to quote you, or if I can using the mobile app, but about the TIEs in the running the belt sequence, from what I understood, unshielded they would still very much go the way of the TIEs in the asteroid belt in ESB. Normal TIEs don’t have shields, as you pointed out.

(Potential spoilers?

The shields the ship was projecting on them were what made them be able to just bounce off the asteroids on impact instead of the ship just smashing against it. After all, before Han realized they didn’t have any shields, he tried to “bounce” the TIE off the asteroid and almost ripped a wing off.

Something Lando said later on seems to imply the shields the ship was projecting on the TIEs were stronger than your typical deflector shields used on say, an X-Wing, seeing as a larger ship can generate more power for the shields than a Starfighter. Especially if it’s only shielding one ship.

(“Off-ship shielding is still a good concept,” Lando pressed. “Planetary defenses will be all the stronger with fighters that can take battle cruiser-class hits.”)

Yeah. I think that's also why they used TIE Advanced fighters (AKA Darth Vader's TIE) for the single runs. They're a heckuva lot more durable than your typical Eyeball. Same with the Bombers they used for the doubles runs.

So I’m also a huge Legend of Zelda fan, and in the part with Srenpidal’s moon coming down, I just can’t help but think about the moon falling in Majora’s Mask. 😂 That’s all.

Peter Sawyer | 49 comments I think we might need to have a vote to see which alien invaders are scarier: the Yuuzhan Vong from Vector Prime, or the Ssi-Ruuk from Truce at Bakura.

(Potential Spoilers)

I think the Ssi-Ruuk win because it' more terrifying to have your mind taken from you than to be killed.

I only vaguely remember Truce at Bakura, but the Ssi-Ruuk were pretty terrifying from what I do recall. I think I'll have to agree with you there.

Although, having an encounter with the Yammosk doesn't seem to be a walk in the park either. I recently read that part with poor Miko. That's not something everyone who encounters the Yuuzhan Vong would have to deal with, though.

Yuuzhan Vong somehow take a long time to neutralize. The war goes on for a long time. My head canon on why the Vong have varying degrees of immunity to the Force is that they evolved/changed due to being in a different galaxy.

I like that theory. I even wonder if they have encountered other Force users in the past and even trained themselves to degrees of immunity. The Star Wars galaxy is definitely not the first galaxy they've conquered, so they had to have encountered other Force users. They don't seem very surprised about the Jedi and their abilities.

Peter Sawyer | 49 comments Akindle wrote: "Yuuzhan Vong somehow take a long time to neutralize. The war goes on for a long time. My head canon on why the Vong have varying degrees of immunity to the Force is that they evolved/changed due to..."

That's a good theory. I was thinking them being from a different galaxy probably had something to do with it.

Peter Sawyer | 49 comments I am on Chapter 19. Han is irritating me in the way he is acting towards Anakin. Is there a timeline where he is a good father?

Peter Sawyer | 49 comments I've finished today. Still digesting. One main thought. (Spoiler Space)

I really liked how the Yammosk kind of operated like a foil to the force. First the Jedi were not able to use the force to detect the Yuuzhan Vong. Then they established the Solo children's ability to use the Force to fly as a single unit. The Yammosk's greatest ability was to allow the Yuuzhan Vong to do this on a much greater scale. This allows for the Yuuzhan Vong to be a formidable force. This is needed now that there are hundreds of Jedi, and apparently no Sith. I liked this.

I probally will not finish it soon, but I've liked what I read so far. I'm curently reading Greater Good and loving it, even if it is a little confusing. I think we will see Thrawn in faked exile in Lesser Evil, which comes out in Nov 2021.

Peter Sawyer | 49 comments I enjoyed this book. I've attached my review. No spoilers. When I rate a book, I consider it for what it is. I do not rate a Star Wars book the same way I would rate an Ernest Hemingway Novel.

Vector Prime (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order, #1) Vector Prime by R.A. Salvatore

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Decades after the Battle of Yavin, the Empire is no more. The New Republic has brought peace to the Galaxy. There is a new generation of Jedi that are bringing peace to the Galaxy, and there are no known Sith.

However, conflict brews on Rhommamool and Osarian. The New Republic's leaders are corrupt. And an alien race, the Yuzhan Vong invades and begins to attack, using bioengineered technology unfamiliar to the galaxy.

This was a fun book. In the absence of the Empire and Dark Jedi, R. A. Salvatore created a compelling villain to wreck havoc on the Galaxy and challenge the new generation of Jedi.
